Looking to get this game to play with a friend, whats this whole paradox account thing i see in reviews?

So, yeah this instantly jumped into my eyes when i saw the reviews, and also that its apparently now impossible to even make a paradox account?

Is this still true, and are there any workarounds? Asking before we buy since we cant get a grasp how accurate the reviews are
