Official configs don't work very well I use the one called FIXED Official Configuration by Anvie. Works like a charm.

Its the LG+Y. You need to use LG+A,B,X,Y for all upper row spells if you dont want to use another config as said above.

I had the same problem. I solved it by changing the controller configuration for the game.

You can download the configuration by going into the steam big picture mode --> then select Magicka 2 in your library --> go to "manage game" (german "Spiel verwalten") --> then controller configuration --> click the button "browse config" (german "Konfigurationen durchsuchen") --> then click the button "community". Here you will find the configuration "XBox 360 Inputs (Left Trigger Shift)" by NaClKnight. Choose this and you can use life magic etc. in the game. I use a regular PC gamepad.
