Lately it has been Creature and Ripley's. Even still, I think Attack from Mars and Medieval have a good universal appeal. I almost forgot, I also got hooked on Cue Ball Wizard probably because I spent so much time with Microsoft's version, and this version was so much better. That was the second table I made the wizard goals.
Some easy to achieve Multiballs, the destroy-the-ufo and kill-the-martians figures even make it enjoyable to watch if you have never touched a pinball machine.
Same goes for Medieval Madness which basically is the same thing as AfM with slower gameplay.
PINBOT is my favourite preDMD table. Played it for hours with the whole family on our NES/Famicom.
Best table for a new player? I would probably recommend Monster Bash or Attack From Mars, both can be played rather frantically by a novice, and still get plenty of reward. Also, plenty of depth to them as well.
Medieval Madness
Attack From Mars
Twilight Zone
Scared Stiff
Fish Tales
No Good Gofers
i pick these because they are not too unforgiveing

If we talk about current availability in TPA, I would say: Attack from Mars, Medieval Madness and Monster Bash are pretty popular, maybe because they are easy to understand and play but also have great theme and humor .
Twilight Zone is also popular among real wizards out there as its difficulty is considered as one of the tables many qualities.
Star Trek: The Next Generation is another good example for a challenging and rather complex table, plus the quality of the table is so high, you don't need to be a fan or even know the franchise to enjoy it (although it may enhance the fun, of course).
- Attack from Mars
- Theatre of Magic
- Medieval Madness
- Monster Bash
and
- Tales of the Arabian Nights
as it is always free in TPA, a great table and a nice way to try out the hobby without restrictions.

Mars Attacks
Those two are great fun straight away and look the best. The others are just as fun when you know how to play them. Then again there's a few more like those.
