System Shock® 2 (Classic)

Game keeps pausing when walking
I just downloaded the game. Whenever i start to walk forward the screen game freezes for about a second or two then resumes again but repeats after taking a couple of more steps. The freezing doesn't happen when I'm looking around with the mouse only when i start to move my character. I'm running the game on windows 8. I tried saving the game in a different location and altering the frame rate cap but it didn't change anything. Anyone have a similar problem or know what I can do to fix it? Thanks

restore cam_ext.cfg to the default state and make sure you are not forcing anything via the gpu control panel (especially not vsync off, the game hates that). also, post your shock2.log.

ok. Where would will I find the "shock2.log"? Sorry not really computer savy. Is it the one labeled shock2 that is the text file? Thank you
should be in the SS2 folder, wherever your steam game cache is.

This?
yes. download the extra safe cfg from the FAQ, and extract it to your SS2 folder, overwriting your current one. should help.
Cool thank you! I'll keep you posted if it worked or not.
Didn't work : /
Actually never mind. I did a computer restart and now it's working smoothly. Thank you for all the help!
did you overwrite the file properly? remember, you need to extract it from the zip package.
I always have this issue during the first 2 areas of the game (where you choose your branch and training), but it goes away after I actually start playing the other levels.

Maybe I just get used to it...?
as a lot of stuff is tied to the framerate, the game needs to be running 60FPS, no more, no less, so if you are having such issues, you are usually either force disabling vsync somehow, or running a very mediocre graphics card that is not capable of running the game at proper speeds - not with multisampling enabled, anyway. the safe cfg disables it, and allows the game to run fast enough even on crummy hardware.
