System Shock® 2 (Classic)

System Shock® 2 (Classic)

Similar Games?
I'm looking for a game that is similar to the first system shock. Complex, sci fi and inclusive of computer hacking. But I don't want horror, like Deadspace. Something that involves destroying murderous robots, but not human beings.

Any ideas?

The Deus Ex or Bioshock Series. :)

I also recommend singularity

Thanks guys, had a look at the games you suggested, but they weren't exactly what I am after. Those games are pretty action orientated, whereas I was looking for something a bit more, sci fi, like the first System Shock. It's hard to explain what I am looking for and I am not sure if such as game actually exists.

Thanks for your suggestions though, feel free to share more if you think of something.

The problem is, as game engines progressed, they have changed the way games play. So we get things like deus ex human revolution, which was good, but certainly far more action based than the original (just forget the deus ex games in between, they were rubbish)

its kind of the way things have gone,

Mass effect is a great space opera spanning 3 games (which I think are fantastic) but while they have fantastic storylines and exploration, there is a load of action in them, but if you like sci-fi's they really should suck you in, they have so much atmosphere.

Then you have the fallout series of rpgs, which are set in the aftermath of nuclear war. They are a great series of games, again, not quite sure they are what you are after.

Yeah true... however I object to the part about the other games being Rubbish. DX: Invisible War wasn't a bad game. It was a damn good one. Sadly compared to the original it was a vastly inferior, dumbed down game suffering from SEVERE Consolitis. The Fall was damn good for what it was, a mobile game. Sadly, it was intended to be an episodic series and the first ep flopped so the chances of getting a second much less the rest are pretty much none.

If you do find games that fit your criteria, please share the results. I'd love to find similar games too. Something that's more about tech / hacking than shooting and with a focus on atmosphere.

If you don't mind something with lower production value / indie, you could take a look at Spirits of Xanadu. Haven't played it myself yet, so I can't say if it's any good, but it definitely looks like it's inspired by System Shock.

You'd think that a lot of developers would try to imitate stuff like Bioshock due to its success, but it's probably just too difficult to pull off well.

I know that you said you don`t really want horror game suggestions, but the upcoming SOMA might be your thing

I share your problem, there are lots of old games out there, some even like this that you want, however i cant remember there names.

I have a few old ones in mind, not all are connected to robots however or even like system shock, but as a person who likes system shock i know other games i like during that time...

Maybe look into deus ex like others have said, or look into games like doom, quake, shogo, evolva, half life...

Cant think of many more really

Teleglitch tries and fails to be like System Shock. IDK if you're going to find what you are looking for. IDK If it has hacking, but Hard Reset is cyberpunk and has you fighting robots for most of the game. Binary Domain is also robot shooting and cyberpunk but less likely to have hacking.

Try Dead Space

If you hadn't ruled out Horrow games, there would be quite a few I would recommend, such as Dead Space (which is rumored to have started off as System Shock 3). About the only ones I can recommend are quite standard, such as the BioShock series.

There is an Indie game that was released recently that may be to your liking, called 'Spirits of Xanadu'. It's just missing the RPG elements, though.

There is a Half-Life 2 mod called Dystopia which has hacking sort of similiar to SS1's Cyber Space. But this is multiplayer only

Alien: Isolation fits everything you described (though technically, you CAN kill humans there - it's just not advised).

It's also the most similar game I've seen to System Shock 2 in years.

Interstellar Marines aspires to be a realistic and tactical cross between Rainbow Six and System Shock. But it's an early access title and won't be finished for years. It's a bit more action oriented than what you asked for but hacking will play a huge part in it. It may be worth keeping an eye on.
Some Games that come to my mind:

Dystopia is a multiplayer sci-fi FPS mod for Half Life; has very few in common with SS2

Spirits of Xanadu... dunno haven't played it

E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy is a sci-fi RPG FPS Hybrid, but with far more combat, about as much or more Character customization and less story that isn't told properly. (Text-based)

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines is not similar to SS2 at all, but in terms of athmosphere and music it's equal to better than SS2. It's not sci-fi themed though, but still very very good.

tldr: more of a general you-should-play list, I hope thats ok for you OP:)

The FIRST System Shock, not the second? How about Bioforge? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BioForge

I also found this: http://routinegame.com/
I don't know much about the gameplay but it looks like there is some horror, though.
