Classification-wise, it is a survival horror, but I wouldn`t group it with games like Amnesia or 'Silent Hill. It certainly has a horror atmosphere, but I personally found it a lot milder than other games of the genre. It can be a bit unnerving for some people.

as said its not exactly like pure horror games like those listed, but still has a lot of creepy atmosphere to it. if youre easily scared then yes this game could get to you.

I didn't find it scary at all. Monsters are pixel mess so its rather funny. But it has that "all-alone" atmoshere that might scare you.

There are no jump scares or anything like it but the atmosphere is really oppresive. There are ghosts but these are just storytelling elements and are not there to scare you in any way, even though some of them can be pretty heavy on the emotional side (The suicide guy in engineering, the ghost of the woman on the Recreation deck crying or her knees in front of her bed knowing everything was lost - that's pretty heavy stuff), helping you to understand and see the sheer horror of the situation your character is in. It's a game that revels in playing with your imagination.

In 1999 when the game was released it was, but now it's more of a fun game.

the game is not scary per se, its just that the atmosphere is. Once you get into the game, you'll probably be jumping at your own shadow. The game uses sound as its medium for horror, there are no jumpscares, no "SURPRISE MOTHAF*CKA!!". Just straight up survival of the fittest.

this, this game is more oppresive then godzillas bollocks on you. Except its even more oppresive as it progresses the number of godzilla balsl increases till it equals the weight of godzilla. I mean seriously it might not scare you silly from a monster that goes ANEDJEFNDJS but its oppresive and creepy.

Dude... what?

I found SS2 to be pretty terrifying. I'd say it's horror.

The horror isn't in jumpscares, but rather in pure dread of what could be around the next corner.

The spiders in the game sound like laughing children. That's something to get nightmares about.

It's not pure horror, but I was creeped out by some sequences late in the game where you explore what appears to be a giant beast's intestinal tract I was kinda creeped out at first by the Hybrids (the main enemies you fight) from how they beg you to kill them or help them while attacking you, but then I realized you can kill them in one or two wrench swings.

This game will give the occasional jumpscare or two, and you may soil yourself but honestly, there are MUCH scarier games out there (F.E.A.R, Doom 3, ect.)

To be honest this was my first TRUE horror game(*cough cough* Alan Wake! *cough cough* [AW is still fun though]) so I was probably scared more than others by this game because I had only just introduced myself to the genre :)

This game is actually the main inspiration for BioShock 1 and 2, which you've probably seen, so the atmosphere tends to be quite similiar.
