Game won't start up on Windows 10
I can't start up the game at all, I re-install it, checked compatibility, and checked other forums and found nothing. Please help, running Windows 10 64-bit

Just tested. Works fine on my System with Win10 64bit. So probably something else is the culprit.

Even tried DEP and still nothing, the only big changes I've done to my system is just the OS and a GTX 980 Ti

try to be a bit more specific. also, do not set any compatibility modes on the exe.

Also I dunno if you haven't done this yet or not but make sure to update your graphics card driver to the windows 10 drivers that are available. Friend of mine told me that he had to do that after upgrading so that might be it though I'm sure you've already done it.

ya all drivers updated but I might have found something to fix this, I gonna try the SS2tool to see if it fixes the issue here

I'm runnin Win 10 and followed this for modding (https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=4447), runs fine without steam beta patch. as link states install SS2Tool first

I'm not sure if anybody still need it, but I managed to fix the issue to run System Shock 2 on Windows 10.
On my system the required steps were:
- find the exe file: SteamDirectory\SteamApps\common\SS2\Shock2.exe
- make a shorcut to it
- go to properties of the shortcut to compatibility tab
- select "WindowsXP", 640*480px, 256colors, administrator rights
- Run the game. It was minimized upon start but this time I was able to maximize it
- go to Configuration, Video, and change the resolution to the desired one.
- Now you can quit game and unselect all compatibility settings. The game should work fine this time

would check whether the 640*480px and 256colors settings are really required, and omit them if not (especially 256colors, pretty sure that can't be doing anything good with an app that runs in 32bit color).

It may depend on the system config.
For me all were necessary - although just for the first run - to be able to change resolution to higher. Then game run in fullHD and 32 bit.
I suppose manually changing the resolution in the config files should do the trick.

ah, so it's that thing with some computers that are too new not being able to display such a low resolution anymore. I guess it's time to set the steam build default resolution to 1024*768.

I had the same issue, running it in Windows 10 with both the Steam and GOG version. Turns out that any of the newer versions crashes it on me so I went back to version 2.42 and it worked fine.

You can set it back under the beta options,
Rght click on System Shock 2 in games list go to Properties and under the Beta tab select the older version.

It also works with version 2.45 for me if I change compatability mode to Windows XP SP3, but this breaks Steam controller functionality in the game.

I have two devices with win10 now, and both run the latest version with no problems. if you are unable to launch the game because your computer is not capable of displaying the default 640*480 resolution, you can always edit cam.cfg and add or modify it manually;
game_screen_size 1920 1080

It's not a resolution issue causing the crashes for me, as the first load on 2.42 it's defaulted to 640x480 and I can change it in the video settings to 1920x1080. I had previously tried changing the cam.cfg and it still crashed. For the moment I will stick to 2.42 which allows me to play with the contoller.

as always, share the crashdump, and the reason shall be revealed.

Set compatibility mode to Windows 7. That's all you need.
