System Shock 2 was made by a collaboration of Looking Glass Studios and Irrational Games.
I guess Ken Levine (who worked at Looking Glass, before founding Irrational Games) didn’t have the rights to the System Shock name and so he went on to make Bioshock instead.

Dead space 1 remindes ME totaly of RE4, not the story but the rest, gamplay, enemys and this stuff.
From what im told in the beginning of its development Dead space was actually meant to be a sequel to system shock, but EA did not get the full rights to system shock so they turned it into dead space.
I was hoping the same. However the rights to system shock for a few years now belonged to some insurance company, I think it was only recently that a new dev managed to get the rights. So maybe there is hope, and who knows? If they make another system shock they might get help from whats left of irrational since they were the original devs.
