If the gun breakage mechanic annoys you, try this.
If you find the gun degradation system frustrating or simply want to tweak it a bit:

  1. Open the SS2 folder in your steam library.
  2. Look for a file named "user.cfg". It shouldn't exist on a fresh install, but check anyway.
  3. Assuming the above final does not exist, open notepad or any other text editor
  4. in this blank document type the following line

gun_degrade_rate 0

If you wish to slow weapon damage as opposed to disabling it entirely, you may use a decimal number. "0.3" would cause weapons to degrade at 30% of normal speed, for example.

When you save the file, make sure to change the file type to "All files *.*" at the bottom right of the save dialog, then save it as "user.cfg".

IF THIS DOES NOT WORK, IT IS LIKELY THAT YOU ACCIDENTALLY SAVED THE FILE AS A TXT OR SOMETHING. MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE FILE EXTENSION IS .CFG

Your guns should now stop snapping like twigs after a few mags. Note that broken guns will stay that way unless repaired. Also note that turning gun damage off basically makes the maintenance skill pointless.

PS. Keep this civil please. If you like the way things are, that's fine. I'm just posting this for the benefit of those who don't.

I don't plan on using this, but a really neat thing to know.

You should make this a guide.

Well maintenance skill still allows higher energy/charge capacity right? Or is that somehow linked to durability?

yes on the charge.

That's why you stack maintenance for all gun classes.

There's also the Tier 2 PSi power Anti Entropy.

This dumb workaround is essentially cheating. Why don't you spawn in more ammo or max out all stats while you're at it?

Thanks for this friend! :)
Nevermind the angry people, reducing the degradation feels a bit more balanced to me and I'm sure you helped a lot of other people!

Just out of interest, and it's been a while since I last played SS2 and I've not modded it before, is there a way to tweak the inventory slot cost of items? It always use to annoy me how much inventory space some items would take up such as the PSI Amp.

strange that you would ask.[www.systemshock.org]

Yep, the preference police are an annoying bunch.

if anything the gun degredation should be increased a little for each difficulty, for the hardest difficulty, you can't go more than a dozen shots with a perfect 10 before it breaks and the costs should be reflected as such in getting the weapon fixed. like fighting the borg, a few phaser hits and you need to remodulate the frequencies to get around the borg shields. makes for a more tactical encounter.

This is NOT a cheat. I was in the Looking Glass message board in the late 90s when this game was released, and the developers even answered a few of my questions. They made several announcements that weapon degradation was broken and even tried to fix it with a patch, but couldn't fix the problem. As I recall I think they basically closed their doors at that point due to financial issues. Sorry, that part is a little blurry. This was several decades ago.

This little fix using that line in the user.cfg file was announced by the developers with one of the patches as a workaround to fix the problem. So it's intended as a part of the game. It is NOT a cheat, and I'm really getting tired of this new generation of players telling everybody that it's cheat when they weren't even there. I was there, I saw it happen with my own eyes.

Don't listen to these people, they don't know what they're talking about. They're making ignorant assumptions without any information.

However it IS a matter of choice. If you want the game to be more difficult, by all means don't turn it off. This game can be very difficult the first few times through it, so it probably would be wise to turn it off at least with your first few attempts. When I first tried playing through this game, the RPG system isn't exactly explained the best that it could be, so I started over a few times and after I felt confident that I understood the game and read a few guides, I added back the weapon degradation by removing the line from the CFG file.

And by the way you can cheat in this game to make it a hell of a lot harder or just have a lot of fun. You can spawn an army of enemies, build a fort with static props and turrets, do all kinds of stuff. I had a lot of fun doing all that!
