The laser pistol is good for just that, tends to be handly if you want to kill cameras and stuff and want to conserve bullets. The downside is recharge stations are kinda hard to come by, so you'll wanna keep batteries on you. The other option is the psy ability that helps recharge I can't remember what its called.
Yes, the laser pistol can be recharged, at the stations or with a battery, so if you already have the stats to wield it, keep it to get rid of cameras or something you don't want to waste ammo on.
But yes, it's pretty weak, and a lot of things in this game are resistant to energy weapons.
The EMP rifle you can get later is literally able to delete mechanical enemies, but you need energy weapons 6 to use it.
Laser rapier is pretty good though, but again, if you spent your points into standard weapons, probably don't also spend on energy for no reason, the assault rifle can carry you through the rest of the game, as well as the shotgun.
But, if you want, for the next playthrough, go energy weapons, Maintnance skill and the PSI discipline Electron Cascade. Now you have infinite energy (more or less) and can charge your weapons/implants any time. It's pretty broken - in a fun way. :) Max maintnance as it gives you more energy capacity for weapons and implants. And maxing energy weapons will increase damage of the laser pistol (as well as modifications which you can do with the french epstein devices - you can find enough to upgrade every weapon from a single weapon category, so no need to get modify skill if you don't want).
The Laser Pistol is pretty good but it's best obtained earlier if you plan on using it. Energy 2-3 lets you one deag hybrids with the Charged shot, and the normal fire mode is good at killing protocol droids and cameras. The main draw of the laser pistol is it lets you conserve ammo for more useful weapons, so the earlier you can get it and invest in it enough to let it do some work, the more you're able to build up stockpiles of ammo for your other weapons.
The Laser Pirate build is also really fun after you've beaten the game a few times and want to spice up your next Playthru.
Yeah, as the poster above me said - laser pistol is great if you plan on it being your main weapon and adding points into energy weapons. I always mostly use it on overcharge. It's slow, but strong. And i never have to worry about ammo, and i can recycle all the bullets and shells for nanites.
Plus, then you have the added benefit of the laser rapier later etc., but for your current playthrough, it'll be great as a camera killer. :)
