Personally, I think Shock 2 is a bit better. Though that's mostly because it has a bigger reach. Most of the designers had never worked on a game, before.

A few differences to note:
Bioshock is a shooter. It follows many FPS tropes; very linear design and any upgrades are almost forced on the player.

System Shock is an RPG Horror game. It follows many design principles not usually found in FPS games; It trusts the player to know what works for them.

It is also worth nothing that, SS2 benefits from multiple playthroughs. It is possible to get stuck and, unable to progress. Don't let this discourage you. Take what you've learned into your next playthrough.

no. well, yes, but you have to know exactly what needs to be done to get the game into an unwinnable state and do it intentionally. so for all practical purposes, no.

also, stuff like "I entered the boss chamber with 5 hitpoints and 2 bullets" does not count.

No bullets, under ten nanites, have to get around a shotgun hybrid: technically not stuck because someone who would run out of bullets and nanites can learn to be nearly perfect at the game instead of giving up.

Bioshock actively punishes you for not spending all your stuff by making loot disappear into the aether when you try to pick it up, and I rather expect nobody in the history of ever has run out of ammo. To be forced to use the pipe wrench outside the very early game, you would have to routinely miss well over half your shots.

Or have better strength and agility than shootyness. Plus, clobbering things saves ammo.

I think it's fair to say that a shooting spree is a luxury not a right in SS2, and this is by design. Mind you, it's a glorious luxury when you do decide it's worth it.
For me System Shock 2 is still the greatest videogame of all time, and I've been passionately playing videogames since i got my first Gameboy in 1991.

Let me tell you, Bioshock is great, but a mere piece of sh*t when compared to this.

If you like to know more about the game in detail, check out my steam review for it.

So far I didn't manage to enjoy it. Spent half a hour testing stuff and looking for stuff. I managed to force it to 75 FOV, but still can't make it 4:3 despite being 1920x1080p and I can't turn on raw input. The mouse accelation is garbage.

Bioshock is basically System Shock for casuals. If you liked Bioshock because you're a casual gamer, then you'll hate SS2. If you liked Bioshock in spite of it being so easy that it's basically impossible to fail, then there's a good chance you'll like SS2.

Dude yes. It's obviously less streamlined than BioShock with a heavier focus on RPG elements but if you loved BioShock, you'll love this too.

It's much better but start with System Shock Enhanced before you try System Shock 2. At least then you'll know what the history with Shodan. Xerxes isn't in the original game.
