System Shock® 2 (Classic)

System Shock® 2 (Classic)

sigh....how do I add subtitles
Honestly it must be me but for a game with such a large modding community behind it...it sure is confusing to get anything done.

I want English subtitles for spoken dialogue but I have no idea how to get it.
I have a file that is called "subtitle.txt" and it it speaks of:
Subtitles are supported for sound and movie files. To enable subtitles you only have to place
appropriate subtitle file(s) in the correct location and enable subtitles with the config var
"enable_subtitles". Subtitles should then appear for all sounds and movies that have subtitles defined in the installed subtitle resource files.

appropriate subtitle files.....ok where are those?
in the correct location....ok where is that?
enable in config var....ok you mean the cam_ext_cfg? because it is at the bottom and enabled.

and yeah so I can get the english subtitles I guess there, do I then ahve to make a folder for it? where do I put that? and why does this note that came with the game speak fo these things without explaining it.....

the docs are talking about the engine being capable of loading subtitles, but to actually have them on the screen, you need to supply them.

make your install mod ready[www.systemshock.org], load the subtitles as a mod, done. remember, if you are trying to modify cfg files manually, you are already doing it wrong - we made sure the average joe never has to touch those.

Doesn't help you? The very top line at that link includes step-by-step instructions on how to download and install mods, and the post itself includes a video of the mod installed and doing exactly what you claim to want.

How are you so bad at this?

right because seeing it working means you know exactly how its done right?
Thats why I can develop videogames, because I saw one.....

and maybe "I am so bad at this" because Im not familiar with that forum style?
normally when I look at a forum post I look at the poster and then the text, not that it happens to say above it somewhere: 8 guests 0 members, or log in, or System Shock prepare for modification, or home/sign up/etc, or Page 1, or reply, or new topic, or 1 guest is here, or indeed that quick help line.

if that was part of the actual post as in, IN THE POST, I might have seen it.

Remember, its up to those who want to depart the information to be clear about it, so its not really me being bad at it, im just the user, its the person who designed that website like that who is bad at it.

Don't let it get to you, dude. It's understandable, there can be high barriers to entry sometimes with SS2 community content. People 'in the know' become so 'in the know' that sometime it doesn't make sense when it doesn't make sense.
That being said, subtitles are a great addition. The way the audio logs are placed throughout the game as you're trying to actually play the game means that the audio can sometimes seem muffled amidst the sounds of the gameplay. :trilogo::wrench::xerxes:

No, because seeing it working should have meant that you'd found exactly what you were looking for.

The hilarious thing is that you started this thread saying "for a game with such a large modding community behind it", but you never took the first, obvious step of installing the mod manager. Apparently you didn't even try. That's kind of amazing.

Idk, I was not born with the knowledge of the existence of a mod manager for this game, sorry, my bad I guess.

Dude, just stop. All you had to do was Google "how install ss2 mods", and you would have gotten multiple results telling you to install the mod manager.

I'm searching for the same stuff and I do not need to feel stupid for wanting easier or clearer information in a language that is not mine.
Other dude just need to ̶s̶t̶o̶p̶ ̶b̶e̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶ ̶d̶1̶c̶k̶ calm down.

Maybe that's what got him angry:
"Honestly it must be me but for a game with such a large modding community behind it...it sure is confusing to get anything done."
'cause he maybe saw it like a way of trash talking about the modding community.
I think we all agree that we should just thank them for their free work, 'cause they are not obliged to share.

Following links from systemshock.org, assuming a Windows installation:

1. Download SS2Tool to your /SS2 directory and install[www.systemshock.org]
2. Download the NewDark patch for System Shock.[www.systemshock.org]
3. Run /SS2/ss2bmm.exe (the mod manager for SS2Tool)
4. Install mod archive(s)... button (on the right)
5. Select the NewDark archive you downloaded in step 2 (currently ss2_v248.zip)
6. Click the archive in the list and "Activate / Deactivate" (button on the right)
7. Download ZylonBane's English subtitles mod.[www.systemshock.org]
8. Install mod archive(s)... again, select the subtitles mod archive (currently ss2_english.subtitles_v2.7z)
9. Click that archive in the list and "Activate / Deactivate" again.
10. Select ss2_english.subtitles_v2. again and "Decrease priority" until it's below ss2_v248
11. Launch game and check that subtitles are displayed

Short version: the subtitles mod relies on the NewDark mod, which is best installed with SS2Tool.

ZylonBane is just perpetually prickly; he did some good QoL mods but it doesn't really seem like he's particularly interested in anyone's thanks or gratitude, and more often than not he is simply an overly pedantic troll whose existence is tolerated due to having done at least two useful things.

2. the raw zip is actually going to break things, don't do it.
5./6. what the what is even that. DON'T DO IT.

maybe you shouldn't be making guides?

anyway, to make it perfectly clear for anyone who needs step-by-step instructions;

1. patch up with the tool
2. get the subtitles mod archive, load it into the modmanager
3. activate (keep the priority fairly high, but doesn't really matter too much), exit and play

I'm continually astounded by how determined some people are to exert extra effort to do things wrong, instead of taking the easy path to do things right.
