pick the marine, and the leftmost career option each year, then get hack to 2, maintenance to 2, and research to 1 asap (then ideally, hack 3 and maint 3, and maybe cyb aff 3), that will get you a free laser gun, enough skill to keep it from breaking, some extra bash power for the wrench, the ability to get into locked crates and disable sec systems, and research monster parts. doing that will make your early life much more bearable.

contrary to the popular belief, it's almost impossible to screw yourself into an unwinnable situation, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be paying attention to what the game is hinting - for example, if you can't figure out that yes, hacking is VERY useful (and repair VERY useless) by the time you reach the third deck, then perhaps this game isn't for you.

hacking and research are the only two skills i'd say are required to beat the game and are extremely helpful. Don't level research beyond 2 though, besides needing it to progress when you reach deck 3 it gives you a 25% damage boost on all enemies when you research an organ they dropped which is obviously useful and all its really good for.

for standard weapons build:
also really don't bother with energy or exotic weapons. save your cyber mods to level up standard weapons to 6 to use the assault rifle, it rules over all. also if you are extremely conservative with ammo its very easy to end up with hundreds of all 3 types of bullets by at least deck 4 or 5. Don't forget to level maintenance to 4 for the AR and conserve maintenance tools as you would bullets. the grenade launcher is a fantastic compliment to the AR. usually when i do a standard weapons playthrough i use nothing but the AR and grenade launcher by the beginning of deck 4 and it carries me through the whole game.

i cant say much on psionics because that would take waaaaaay too long lmao, its deep as hell.
honestly though, just experiment, and see what works for you, this is a massively deep game, and one that's very punishing if you don't know what you're doing.

Remember, you're the only one you can trust, and soldier.....stay alive

good luck :)

like the two before me said: Go for standard weapons and one point in heavy.
Lern to maintain it. just mod the weapon to level 1 and use the special items to upgrade them to level two.
Spend some points into hacking to get goodies and turrets as allys.
Psy is nice as a sidegrade but is no muss.
Things like psy healing or buffs for you statts are nice.
The "pull things to you" spell is only needed in one or two locations for minor items. Nice to have if you alrady have buffs.
One good use of your skillpoints is in strength whenever you feel holding to many items.
Under the line: have fun and try to lern new things.

Easy if you have no idea what you doing and this is your first FPS and first run overall.
Easy gives you more money, less cost for upgrads, less and weaker enemys and so on.
Normal is normal but can be hard at times when you got the wrong gear or skills. its a Challenge early and mitgame. But ones you know what you doing its easy with some handycaps again.
Hard and imposible lower your HP and make enemys mad. Cost for upgrades go up and overall you will find less usefull things.

To be clear: many items in the game are scriped and handplaced but some enemys can drop solit loot like heal and ammo. On higher difficulty you may need to rethink your plans of attack. Running away is always an option.

Easy is for small children and the elderly. Go Normal at least you wusses.

he can change difficulty at eny time in the option menu. cheesy way to get more out of your few upgradepoints/money. Lower it to easy and get 20% off. Rewamp back to max to fight the real fight.

Ive gone normal and its a good challenge, i have a question once ive researched an object do i have to keep it in my inventory for the bonus or can i chuck it and still have the bonus, also do i need to level research past 1?

Why would you think that? After you've read a book, do you have to keep it to retain what you learned from it?

Is the EMP Rifle worth investing in btw?
Igƞis Aug 15, 2020 @ 5:11pm
EMP Rifle is only good for dealing with robotic enemies as in robots and turrets and cameras it deals minimal damage on annelids

Just gonna give my input if any first players read this: my first 'almost' play through around year 2k I played on hard and as a focused hacker/researcher and it was so bloody scary and I pissed my pants and in my head I imagine it was probably the best and the right way to experience this game. It shouldn't be a walk in the park, it should be tense as hell and that's why I feel I picked the right path.

Played it again a couple of years ago, with the same build and difficulty, and while it wasn't as scary, it still felt like the "right" way. Now, the other builds might be fun but in my head, you should play this game as a weak bastard, we're guns break down every other shot and you're in constant agony. 2c
