Hacking in this game makes me want to kms
Seriously roughly 70% of the time the game generates an unsolvable hack and then even when it is *theoretically* possible for me to hack something it never works and I just end up save scumming for 10 minutes praying the RNG will let me through

there must be something I'm missing, or is this one of those get a fan patch moments of old game design?

The hack skill, cyber affinity stat, and hack software all contribute to make hacks easier. There are some psipowers you can use, as well.

also, the percentage displayed does not represent chances of success, but difficulty - so if it says 70%, yeah, you are going to have a bad time.

As far as I can tell, I'm playing through this first time right now, there's zero real logic or skill to it. There's also pretty much no real reason to use the skill... at least up until the section I'm in.

Just click on all the nodes that aren't dangerous and if they don't work just restart. Some of the dangerous nodes can work, but they're completely random as to whether they'll set off an alarm/break the item, or actually function. Hacking is just a good way to waste money for generally very little reward. Any locked rooms you get access codes for.

well, no - being able to break into crates (and disable security) early in the game is very, very helpful, especially if you are not a veteran player.

as far as the minigame goes, yeah, it's really just highlight three nodes in a row, with RNG getting in your way. it does make you think about how sorely you need more resources vs how precious your nanites are at the moment, and gives a nearby pipe hybrid a nice opportunity to go bash your face in, potentially making you brown your pants, so it does what needs to be done to complete the experience in that regard.

Honestly the hacking IS useful and I dont mind time not being stuck while I do it because it makes me make sure I'm safe before using it but the RNG is just painful

Eh, it's usually just ammo in the crates, and considering how many skill points you need to put into hacking to have it give a 40% chance of having a solvable solution isn't that great. Ammo is not that expensive and it's fairly common. Granted, I'm not playing on the hardest difficulty where it might limit ammo drops, but the first half of the game at least I was primarily using the wrench. I really only use guns on turrets and the exploding robots. They just don't do enough damage otherwise.
Even for things like medkits, I've had no issues and it's more beneficial to just up your HP and visit a medical table when your health is low. Med syringes or whatever really kind of suck anyways.

So, I guess I personally just don't see much use to them. There's no locked doors without passcodes, and crates generally only have a small amount of ammo or a med syringe. In DE I really heavily lean towards hacking because it gets you all sorts of useful things, but I've found it pretty... not worthwhile in this.
