Difficulty seems insane even on easy and I suspect the game wants you to grind a whole lot of talents before beating any level even on easy.
Why is it so hard to find a good roguelite tower defense?
There is no 'beating', unless you close all loops, which actually is close to the same as losing. The days go infinite on purpose, as it is all about beating your previous score. I personally like it this way, as it makes you think about what you could have done better, and try to improve within the framework provided.
This game is fresh, and being actively supported, unlike the abandoned Rogue Tower. I'd say give it some time and see if any youtubers or streamers pick it up. I'm a huge fan of tower defense, so I'm having a great time doing a run here or there finding combos and making small chips into the meta progress. I do feel the meta progress is a little slow, but not unbearable. The difficulty of the game is maybe a tad higher than some other TD games, but I think it's very manageable once you get a couple runs under your belt to have some good rounds and have fun.
That's my opinion.
The dev(s?) is/are relatively active here and propably aware of the childhood illnesses of the game, lets see what the first patches do for the game.
This game is a clone of rogue tower, but with even less player agency and more luck required.
Rogue tower just let you choose which path a tile was spawned on. Hexrogues is incredibly similar, in that the tile is spawned at random, however, you get the choice of where to place it AND how to place it. You can forcibly create intertwining pathways and seal up two paths by joining them along a certain distance, if you so choose. Towers are awarded the same way as Rogue Tower in that you get a random selection over each day. But, unlike Rogue Tower, after you unlock some things, you can then re-lock some things that don't suit your build.
There's still plenty of luck involved, there's no denying that. But the player actually does get some agency besides "Well, I guess I'm spawning a path on my longest path again." There is some choice and decision, as well as planning and future-proofing because you can choose where the tile goes. Rogue Tower has none of that.
It's a great TD game, and I've played them since Starcraft 1 map days back in the late 90s.
One of the best that's out there, if you like this genre.
its a game similiar to darkest dungeon, hades, slay the spire etc in which luck of cards you get determines a lot, basically you have to play with what you are dealt. many people dont really know how to play this kind of game so you will usually see complaints.
if you have never played rogue tower or isle of arrows this will probably be very new experience to you and quite a rough one to wrap your head around.
simply placing tiles to extend will get you nowhere and can even make it harder.
if you do choose to buy and play the game here are some tips:
1. keep every lane at a different distance from the castle (this ensures that every single of your towers is shooting with no downtime and makes them come in waves instead of all at once). I myself generally keep one water and one land lane extremely close to my castle in which i barely defeat it while extending others, this works for a long time until i finally have to extend them a little due to scaling.
2. its imporant to place towers in spot that cover 2 or 3 lanes and have maximum coverage of those lanes aswell, that goes for every td game but in this game you dont want it close to the road at all because you will end up closing some of the lanes at some point (unless you use a specific wonder that helps this). but its also important to place some towers that cover single or dual lane aswell (if you follow tip 1, and then place ice towers closer to entrances of long distance lanes, it will make them more staggered).
3. in general have as many portals as open as possible at every "distance". which makes it more likely to get a balanced round (aka the closest wave comes and everyone shoots it and kills it before the next one arrives).
4. greed as much as possible, dont overspend on defensive tower, start the round and see how it goes and then decide to buy economy tower or one that shoots.
5. place the tiles as soon as possible (in general unless its a tile that closes the lane and you want to use it next round to kill a few units), this means you get the houses for faster economy growth.
6. generally picking a better upgrade even if you dont currently utilize that tower [meaning if you have 5 arrow towers and 1 freeze tower, you would usually get an upgrade for arrow towers, but in this game (unless you are in immediate danger) you want to choose an upgrade that has higher star rating instead (even if it happens to be a tower you dont even use]. basically if you get an upgrade that says increase attack speed of arrow towers by 20% and then another one that increase freeze towers attack speed by 50% (im just throwing random examples) you should choose the freeze one.
7. scaling of towers in this game is a bit harsh, therefore you have to plan a little instead of just throwing towers around. luckily when you sell a tower you get 80% of the money back which is insane for repositioning and scaling back the costs. after placing around 4-5 of 1 tower in great scattered spots, you will want to place some other tower next to them in same/similiar numbers (especially because they have elemental sinergies which you must abuse). In general ice tower after a few arrow towers will keep you rolling for long time on hard, early game the problematic round which can catch you off guard is round 7 and thats where you want to go a bit more into defense and then farm again until round 10.
and then you should ride the train of your upgraded 2 towers for a decent ammount and only choose a new tower if the 2 other upgrades are 1 star or dont fit your current situation. that new 3rd tower will be great powerspike as it will cost very little to build multiple of them, and then you upgrade this one and go for 4th tower and so on.
8. this goes with number 7, but getting too many towers early will clutter your upgrade choices a lot, what i like to do is get economy tower first (if offered), upgrade only arrow tower and the economy tower and then get another tower on round 6 or 7 to help with growing strength of enemies. after exhausting good upgrades thats when you go for elemental synergies or a new tower (one or another basically shows up every time).
9. currently units are way worse than towers, i do have some nice uses of ranged units which lets me greed more but they need to be buffed for sure.
excellent guide
I've been thinking about using tiles with houses to 'build' an industrial area if possible.
So yeah, this game is very interesting for many reasons.
