'Boil 10 l of water'
Steam Freak
In its current state, I genuinely find the achievement for boiling 10 liters of water in 'Steam Engine Simulator' unreasonable for three main reasons.

  1. It takes approximately 25 hours - The time required is made more challenging due to frequent crashes, which necessitate constant attention to the game.
  2. Lack of content - I understand that this wasn't intended to be a game initially. However, when the game content only lasts for about 15 minutes, a 30-hour achievement seems excessive.
  3. No interaction - The game requires one to wait patiently and passively while it runs. There is no interaction during the waiting period for boiling the water, excluding the crashes.

Don't misunderstand, I find 'Steam Engine Simulator' to be a fantastic learning tool about steam. My critique is specifically about the 'Steam Freak' achievement.

How can we rectify this? Substantially reducing the achievement's requirements or removing it would be beneficial. We already have an achievement for 'Boil 1 l of water.' Alternatively, increasing the amount of water that can be boiled could be another solution.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hello,

I agree that the ammount of water needs to be a lot more.

The "Steam Freak" achievement takes approximately 25 hours according to my calculations in the newest update:

Many thanks for that guide, great job!

I like the challenge. This is my last achievement to get. I'm at 4.6l so far. I treat it like an idle game. Throw it in the back and let it run, checking in every now and then.

I do wish/hope this game comes out with DLC or something. I wouldn't even mind paying. I really enjoy exploring simulations. There are some fantastic possibilities, if the developer wants to keep going with it. It would be fun to see more complex components like economizers, condensers, hot well, etc.

its going to take me basically about 18hours to get to 10L running at ~3000 RPM. Already at 7.3L after letting the sim run overnight

That's quite peculiar. It seems as though everyone has different statistics, even with the same setup. Currently, it takes me 26 hours to reach 10L. Nonetheless, I'm operating at max water, with 60% throttle at 3500.4 RPM.

huh weird. I believe i kicked on hell mode around 1pm yesterday got it running 3K rpm pretty quickly and then just walked away. It's now just about 8am at nearly 75% of the way done. Not sure why but i cant open the water valve the whole way without it flooding the boiler. its at about 60%?

Eh, dunno, not every achievement needs to be achieved if you don't want to?

Indeed, that's a valid point. However, I am an achievement hunter and have been following this YouTuber for some time, greatly appreciating his content. I hope that this discussion thread could potentially improve the game for those of us who are actively hunting for achievements.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Hey guys. I understand that the achievement is a little ridiculous. When I created it, I was not aware that there were people out there this interested in getting Steam achievements. In fact, after learning about the Steam SDK I was a little shocked that anyone valued achievements at all considering how meaningless they are (ie they're extremely easy to fake/cheat). I figured this was an achievement that a few dedicated individuals might reach after casually playing the game over the course of a few months and it was easy to AFK the achievement in just a few sittings. I know the crashing bugs are a bit annoying but they've been fixed in the most recent version. I'll leave it for now but if I get a lot more feedback complaining about this achievement, I'll remove it.

never underestimate the power of goals.. :D

I got the 10L achievement in a bit over 24 hours of 3500 RPM Hell mode.

Thanks for making such a goofy little fun thing..

Seriously consider making a game of this, I for one would pay for it :)

Thank you for the feedback, and for making this great game =)

I think the people who have that achievement (myself included), will be disapointed that their time has now gone to waste...

Just let it stay, people can effortlessly run the game in the background, if they so desire :MrBrown::steamthumbsup:

So with the new update you can sustain a sort of instant evaporation state if you drain the tank fully, allow it to heat to max (in hell mode and with the relief valve closed), have the throttle below 50%, and allow water to enter the tank. granted it will still take forever but you can run it in the background without checking. at 48% throttle iv been maintaining 2941 RPM for a few hours as I was working on other stuff. the trick is to keep the pressure fluctuating around the 50psi mark so that as soon pressure drops it requests water, but as soon as the water hits the tank it goes to steam and raises the psi again, allowing the tank to maintain temp with minor output to the wheels. the reaction is easy to brake and may not work on normal mode.
I just think its neat to mess with, i don't exactly care about the achievement, but it is cool that it is there for people that do.

you can push it a bit further and get it up past 3500RPM :)

To be honest, Its still better then the grind of many games to get to completion.... Some require you playing the game on every difficulty, Repeating the whole thing sometimes being upwards of 100-150 Hours to get

100% water valve 56% throttle = 4283rpm :steamhappy:
