One trick you can use is that when you see a system that is buying general goods or energy at a high price, you can buy every battery or air filter you see and sell them there for a profit. Those count as essential items, so you can keep buying them even when you’re in debt. Just make sure you make it to the system you’re selling them to before midnight when the prices change.
a lot of the money goes into power and sometimes fuel, when at medium settings on power, it can really mess you up at times. so custom rules can help in making things expensive but cut down on all the power hungry truck.
I've used custom setting everything thing is left on normal except job bonuses I put on high and been perfectly comfortable playing regarding income.
I actually just started a new game because my original save is soft locked and I've been rushing the story on "recommended". I've basically only doing jobs on my way to the next story mission. I managed to get myself fully stocked with 6 batteries, 4 UCCs, full air filters with 3 extras, and a couple upgrades on the truck all by level 3.
The gameplay loop is super easy once you get a feel for it
