does outdoor light´s do anything?

so as most know lights use power. so it is good to turn off the indoor lights while not needed.
but what is with the outdoor lights? do they anything exept using power?
i tryed to turn them off an on but i realy cant see the difference

In some systems it helps, particularly if you are looking around your ship... but I imagine it will make a bigger difference in multiplayer, when headlights can prevent head on collisions.
