If you are asking if they can make super long space lanes that are alternatives to the Hyperspace Lanes... I don't see that happening. Clearly, this is a universe where Hyperspace Travel has been discovered. We don't know HOW they get the Gates into place (If they have Hyperjump capable vessels that have Hyperspace Navigation... or if they send out slower FTL ships to explore new systems and set up Jumpgates. However, for our Space Trucks... we simply wouldn't have the FUEL.
Based on the speeds we are going, it would take us months or even YEARS to travel merely inside the space system. We would need to replace our sleeping racks with Cryosleep Chambers and go Autopilot to travel between Systems in a Sector without the Hypergates. This would mean, by the time our delivery arrived, unless it was prepaid and addressed to the commonwealth, the business sending and entity receiving it may not even exist anymore.
The Hyperjump Gates are deeply necessary for our trucks as is. Of course, perhaps they could create an alternative to the Hyperjump Gate... some sort of Superstring Tunnel that takes longer for the driver, but doesn't dilate time as rapidly as the Hyperjump Gate. The only problem with that is that you are talking about having competing infrastructure that accomplishes a similar goal for no gameplay bonus. It would be hours of flying automated paths. If that's all you want, the Dev's could add an option in the menu that just shows the truck flying indefinitely in a Hyperjump Tunnel. Players can customize the truck's cosmetics... but as they play the game and deliver different kinds of cargo, they can also display it in this Hyperjump Tunnel "Screen Saver" for their own enjoyment.
The only OTHER possibility would be eventually adding advanced trucks that have their own Hyperjump Drive and Navigation system. They may have to leave the populated/traffic areas of the System to engage the drive, but they would be able to plot their own hyperspace course that could give them short cuts between certain systems that don't have Lanes or have express lanes that charge a toll fee. But this doesn't give you the "long haul" drive I think you were imagining.
I think the real solution may be if the Devs ever get around to publishing new area expansions. One of the strengths of this game are the amazing Skyboxes they have for each system. People have been clamoring for new systems for a while. I suggested replacing the old Demo of the game (which is no longer available) with an "Asteroid Belt Explosive Delivery" that would kinda be like the movie Sorcerer, only in space. Players would make a Dangerous Delivery from deep space, through a difficult course with multiple paths... scoring based on time, cargo condition, and truck condition... and arriving in Onyx and receiving "official papers" from Barrow that allow them to do Trucking Jobs in the Core Worlds. Perhaps there could be special "Link" systems between Onyx and whatever else is out there that are, essentially, those "Long Hauls". You would need to haul extra fuel with you... although there may be hidden fuel stations or salvage along the way that could keep you going. Something similar might exist beyond Terminus Link as well.
These super Long Hauls would be a great place to introduce Pirates/Star Bikers into the game as well.
