Cargo Shelf Net?
maybe some kind of net you can hang and pull down witha button press in the cargo hold so when you hit something or your grav drive goes out cause you run things till they're burnt out you dont have to do the annoying task of putting all your hard cases and such back on the shelves

pro tip: use only cases put them on the shelves facing you and open them. they wedge themselves into place problem solved :-)

Which is fine for the hard cases, but doesn't help for fuel jugs and gas tanks, or other items that won't fit into a hard case.

Opening the boxes is a good temporary solution. A net should be part of the upgrade system, or even something like "magnetic boxes" that can be purchased that don't move when placed on the shelves.
This net thing kinda makes sense however rigging is something already used in the transport industry and it blows my mind why they did not think of this. Ratchet straps, ropes ect. exist why did they not add this to the game?

I put all that stuff in the airlock, pretty essential when running without gravity.

Won't they still bump into each other and break over time?

Yes. Best to just store things in there that don't have HP, like fuel cans.

It's unlikely that anyone will buy those items that don't fit into hard cases, they will be gains from scavenging, aka they are 100% profit. Hence my recommendation would be to sell those asap, eg in the same system you obtained them, it's virtually impossible to prevent damage to those during travel, thus loosing sales value.
The only reason to keep (immortal) fuel cans bouncing around in the air lock is if you are desperately low on cash, else sell them as well asap. The weight is punishing to boot.

Until you run into something- a good enough impact will still knock them out of the shelf. Granted the stuff in the cases still won't lose HP, but if your gravcomp is down those things can block a LOT of your view when they float into the front.

That must be at a 'driving full speed into a wall' level - I got hit by an oncoming truck (thankfully not dead center) and that did not dislodge a single hardcase. I could imagine that not putting the case sufficiently far back made the opening of the lid inefficient.

Yeah, I have never seen that happen.

Until we get a net or "magnetic crates" not much else we can do.

Not necessarily. I've had boxes dislodge from not being hit at all. Could be from small pings from little rocks. After a while they 'sometimes' tend to shift around and I have to adjust all the boxes.
Gigantus Oct 6, 2024 @ 8:42pm
As I said, never happened to me, even at high impacts.

What did happen was boxes floating around before I figured out how much they needed to be inside the shelf before opening the lid. Without gravity they made their way to the cockpit by simply decelerating.

You can imagine it, but that wasn't the case for this event. ;p When I started using that trick myself, I always shift them against the back wall far as possible, then drop and pop the lids open.

Not full speed into a wall, but at about 135 in a highway and a two-trailer jackass coming the other way cut across the middle all of a sudden. From full hull to four breaches and cases all over the cabin because the AI was drunk again...

If you're using boxes to wedge things in you need to put the boxes at an angle and not straight forward. Then you can open the lids. This sounds like you're trying to wedge things with your boxes way too far forward.
