What is the point?
As I'm typing this, All I Do Is Drive by Johnny Cash, is playing on my Pandora. But 91 minutes in so far all im seeing is that you can pick up a job, go pickup cargo, fly to jump gate, fly to drop off point, deliver cargo, fix whatever just broke, go to job board, pick another job, fly to cargo, pick it up, fly to jump point, etc etc. Is this Demo just a proof of concept? There doesnt seem to be any challenge or goal here beyond delivering loads that are all essentially the same. What is the point of this game? I play Hardspace Shipbreaker and that game is cutting up the same ships over and over but there is a goal and slight variances that make for the odd challenge. I play Snowrunner where you are also just bringing cargo from one place to another but there is ::Crap:: in the way presenting a challenge. this is just open space, unless you count the AI drivers that can not see you as a challenge.

When I saw this demo I thought, awesome, gonna get me a Packyderm 3000 and start haulin' squar hogs while eating a hotdog. Maybe a random fight with people trying to jack my rig or haul ... you know ... like Space Truckers movie :)

hey, at least they pay us immediately after we unhook a load

The point of the game is to survive the trip.
It's all about the journey, not the destination.
This is a survival game like Raft, to the theme of a space trucking sim.
The main challenge is that you've got a bunch of different ways to die, and a bunch of different systems to keep track of. If the player fails to keep everything in order then they miss their delivery requirements and lose income.
Regardless of the why, the game focuses on the how. Survival for survival's sake. How much money can you rack up before the cold grasp of mistress space finally takes you into her infinite embrace.

Was really hoping somebody made an interesting hauling game with cool fun gameplay for once. Oh well maybe somebody will get it right.

Star Citizen is working on the cargo (& economy) refactor now, by looking to add deep and immersive systems (full logistical chain etc). Might take a while though...

If by "Might take a while though" you meant 20 years from 2024, I would tend to agree with you.

It's just big mutha truckers in space, what's not to like about it. If you want a more serious game there are other options.

The manual cargo loading with handling vehicles, + cargo centres + logistical hubs + delivery missions is expected for April this year, so I'd bet for a release around June and for it to 'work' in around one year.

I was about to say the same. Since shifting Teams and focus from Squadron to PU, the development velocity is beginning to increase! Fingers crossed that momentum will now remain, as unlike most studios across the industry, they are actually actively recruiting :)

What's the point of existing? All I do is wake up, do some stuff, go to sleep, and repeat...

Some people would say, "and that's why psychologists exist", but it's actually the other way around.

Welcome to the world of trucking, freight hauling, and logistics in general my friend!

I've heard logistics companies are driving you all into the ground with tighter delivery deadlines, that true? If so, how are you coping with that? Also, if you're late, do they just dock you some of the fee or all of it? Just wondering how harsh it really is...

Are you talking about Star Citizen? a "game/telethon" still in "alpha" after half a billion dollars?

You mean the game I have been playing for the past 8 years, have probably hundred of hours on, have been playing with friends for years and that although it definitely has its issues with bugs, and way too long development still has more content than most big space games?

Yes, that one.

But instead of doing the sheep and repeating what everyone says, the game is free for one week currently, try it for yourself.

Early Alpha, but enjoyable nevertheless.

You sound like a folk who 'cried blasphemy' when Musk first exclaimed that he would land a booster on an 'X'. And what did he accomplish in the end? 3 boosters landing on their respective 'X' in-sync with one another in close proximity... :)

My company pays me in percentage, which means I get X% of whatever the overall cost of the load is. (so if a load costs $1000 to ship, I get $270 of that into my weekly paycheck) I've delivered loads up to 2 days late due to mechanical or weather issues before, and still got the same exact pay as I would have if I had gotten there a day early.

But then again I'm a company driver. For owner ops its a bit different. Usually theres late fees and such, but its been that way for decades really.

As far as the actual deadlines tho? I haven't seen any change in those since I started driving years ago. It really just depends on the cargo type, and how badly the customer needs it. Most of the stuff I haul tho is usually fairly open ended flexible in terms of delivery windows.(mostly construction materials going to hardware stores, like , steel, lumber, shingles, and sheetrock)
