The best items in the game are earned through story, encounters and such. Renown is scarce enough that you're better off spending it on characters.
this was very helpful, ty
But i'm also confused as some items say 6, if level is capped at 5 why would they say higher? Or maybe i'm looking at the wrong number?
I will keep that in mind, it sounds like you folks are saying some items are good, just don't waste your money buying lots of things.
The most useful items can be found by fighting 'til the end of wars, and with events you can have during your travels. Of course, you can miss some of these because of "wrong" choices but that's the spirit of the game, uh? :)
So that begs the question, are those items random? Are they attached to specific fights? Do they just give them out in order? I just wonder if there are items you can miss by not picking the right fights to chase and such. I don't really want to know which ones to look for, just more the mechanics behind it.
Those are random.
In addition to the items, it's also worth doing the "kill a few more" if you're in good health because it also gets you more renown, which you can then use to level or buy an item you really like.
The best way in my opinion is to fight whenever you can (and supposing that your party isn't severely injured). You will gain renown, sometimes items and then you'll be more efficient for the next.
The beginning of the game is the most difficult, even when you know well the mechanics. In the end (TBS3), with good combinations and knowledge, you can almost look all your ennemies fall one by one without doing anything. Alette with Overwatch and Bloodletter is a good example.
