How do you equip swords and bows?

I can't figure it out.

I don't know if it's a bug or if the game is just like that, but I only had to send civilians to train in the archery or in the barracks and they would come out with weapons equipped, and if I took away their militia and archer jobs, they would drop a bow and sword that were kept in the warehouses.

Its like that. They automatically equit items when trained

Ah, ok. Is there a way to tell if they have one equipped or not?

Yes, you can see the equipment they are equipped with in their profile UI.
