Thoughts on Ashley (SPOILERS)
I feel like a lot of the discussion on here has been centered around what may happen to Andrew, but I have a few lingering questions about Ashley. Specifically, I'm wondering what she was trying to say to the demon in the car dream sequence in episode 2, what she kept trying to say to Andrew pre-parenticide, and if there are any hints we can draw from these to speculate on what may happen in episode(s) 3. I think the best way to discuss is to go over what we know about her, and what we may be able to draw from that.
  • She is obsessed with Andrew, and obsessively seeks his approval. Anyone that could in any way get in the way of him giving her attention becomes her target.
  • She shows no empathy toward anyone other than Andrew.
  • She is seemingly incapable of establishing healthy relationships with anyone, and has a warped sense of what constitutes a healthy relationship.
  • She is well aware of the kind of power she has over Andrew.
  • More than anything else, she hates the thought of Andrew becoming more independent.
Keep in mind that this is just a list of potentially relevant ideas I've come up with off the top of my head, so it's very possible there's more that I'm not thinking of. What can this tell us about my initial questions, then? Honestly, I'm not sure, which is why I'm posing this as a question to the community. When I first played through the game, I felt like in both cases she was talking about Andrew possibly being attracted to her, but writing all of this out I feel like it doesn't line up. It's possible, I would say even likely, that she was trying to tell the demon that Andrew's personality is "shifting," as she puts it, and that she was just looking for more confirmation that he was with her in killing their parents, but somehow those answers don't feel complete to me. If anyone has any further ideas or implications that I may have missed, please let me know.

This probably refers to their relationship changing in nature, given that this is right after they have a small fight because Ashley does not take their new life's dangers very seriously which frustrates Andrew. At the same time, Ashley is fearful and hurt by his anger. Ashley has little concept of consequences, future planning, or risk and displays an infantile, almost naive mentality in many ways. Andrew is prone to worry, paranoia, and anxiety. In contrast, Ashley rarely worries about anything unless it's something to do with Andrew's attention or his relationship with others, who could potentially take him away from her. In gameplay terms, the shift is that of which route the player will take, burial or decay, and the fight in the car happens just before the player must make vital decisions that decide the future of Andrew and Ashley's relationship. Ashley longs for the days wherein Andrew was Andy, fearful and dependent upon her for approval and direction while showering her with the affection and attention she sorely lacked elsewhere. He started to grow into a man and matured more normally than her, going to college and trying to be normal while Ashley made no such effort and simply clung to him. Her arrested development refuses to allow her to move beyond the nostalgic days of their childhood when they played mostly carefree and wherein Nina's death held power over Andrew which Ashley happily exploited. Without this, she feels that Andrew will just leave her because her low self-esteem causes her to not understand why others would bother to associate with her unless she has something to keep them with, whether it's her body as in the Burial Lover's route, or blackmail. Their status as fugitives pleases her greatly because it means that she has one way to keep Andrew around when he has nobody else to turn to, but the reality of their situation sets in along with Andrew's changing behavior which scares her. Ashley cannot live without Andrew so anything that threatens their codependency is of grave danger to Ashley.
