Other Strategy RPGs?
Looking for tips on other "modern" strategy-Jrpgs, preferably with a fairly serious tone. Agarest has an okay level of silliness, whereas after vomiting at the "humor" in the first Disgaea-game I never want to touch that series again.

Platforms I use are 360, pc and PS3.

I enjoyed Kamidori Alchemy Meister a lot, although it's a hentai title. The gameplay's good and it's on the PC.
I'll second this. Despite the fact that it's a hentai game, it actually has has good SRPG gameplay and is one of the only few JRPG/SRPG games on the PC. If I had to rate it's silliness, I would put it at "okay" right next to Agarest.
If you can look past it's "H-scenes" then I would definitely check this one out.
Looked up some screenies and it seemed interesting (And now I don't mean Hentai-screenies!)! I'll look it up after I'm done with Agarest I think!

There is only one thing to say about Kamidori Alchemy Meister: come for the eroge, stay for the gameplay.

As for other SRPGs... There are quite a few on consoles, such as the Suikoden series, Final Fantasy Tactics and so on to name a few.
You could say then that the Heroes of Might and Magic is also a SRPG more or less, but there is seriously way too much SRPGs hehe.

the problem is how you are gonna optain it. I had to pay a lot for games ship directely from Japan and most of VN companies in Japan don't really want to sell their games outside of their little world.

One of my all-time favorets shall always be Shining Force 2, originally for the Sega Gens, an old but great game, Steam has it available to buy for the PC, also on my all-times favorets, Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, for the PS2

Pretty much like Sengoku Rance then.
Since you mentioned owning a ps3 (they're backward compatible, yeah?) Growlanser Generations on Ps2 is really good.
It comes with two games, Growlanser 1 and 2. They have a pretty similar vibe to Agarest.

Only the first versions are. They removed the compatibility chip to save in costs and it's absent in most versions of the PS3.

Wow, no one mentioned Xcom: Enemy Unknown? That one is amazing

Well, fair enough.
But, even though it isn't Japanese, I do think it's a must for SRPG fans
In my humble opinion there is no greater strategy JRPG than Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for PSP/Vita. It so easily surpasses pretty much all other SRPGs, including FFT, Ogre Battle, Dragon Force, Shining Force, and so on.

Tactics Ogre: LUCT is worth buying a PSP/Vita for. If you haven't tried the game, you are missing out on such an expansive, deep, intriguing, difficult yet rewarding experience with an amazing story and even better dialogue. Did I mention a branching storyline and the ability to rewind to play out different options? There's hundreds of hours of content here! You are welcome for changing your life with this single recommendation. :)

PS: The Last Remnant is a lost treasure for sure, even if light on the strategy. After 200 hours I can say TLR is a brilliant game, one of Square-Enix's best.

Anything that exists only on hand consoles like the PSP doesn't exist at all. At least, not for me. :(
Well, seeing as we're getting away from the original post.. X-com: Enemy Unknown for the PC is far inferior to UFO: Enemy Unknown for the Amiga! And Final Fantasy Tactics is still one of my all-time favorite games (The original for PS1). And yes, sadly my PS3 is only a month or two old, so backwards compatbility is out of the window.. luckily I own a PS2 as well ;D

And I agree Trehek :( Stupid handheld consoles should never have been invented, they steal all the great genres and we're left with crappy shooters!
