I hate to admit it, but this game is a diappointment
It just feels so barebones. For starters, it's only 5 measly chapters, most of which is just filler passing off as main story, and what story there is is pretty weak. Then there's the matter of the cities. Sotembori is nice but it's tiny, and Ijincho is cut in half. Together they barely amount to the size of Kamurocho, which they decided not to include. I'm fine with them dissing Kamurocho, but only if they add something worthwhile to replace it! why not include a full version of Ijincho? they already have the files, since this game is built on top of judgement, why make it smaller on purpose? why not add a new area like Shinseicho from yakuza 2 which is also in Osaka? the Castle is nice but it feels more like a detour than an actual city, akin to the river styx in the old games.

Lastly there is the combat. It feels great, a huge upgrade over Y6. There was so much potential, yet the movesets themselves are so barebones. Where are all the cool mechanics from the previous games? you can't even grab enemies from behind anymore. And only 2 styles. Why? they already implemented brawler and beast styles in the Dragon Engine during the Kaito Files! it would've costed them NOTHING to give them to Kiryu in this game.

All the wasted potential is so disappointing, it feels as if they went out of their way to gimp the game, like they wanted this to be more of a promotional tie-in for Y8 than an actual game worth remembering. I mean the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ demo for Y8 that comes with Gaiden is half its disk size. This is the first time I've ever regretted buying a Yakuza game, and that's heartbreaking (also 50 bucks, yikes, when did games become so expensive?).

I know it's not all bad. The arena group fights are brilliant, the bosses are great and the combat is smooth. But the positive points just make the negatives all the more frustrating.

The game feels like they started with designs on a full AAA title but decided to cut it short at a certain point. My guess is they realized they would end up delaying Infinite Wealth for too long if they fully fleshed this one out, which would risk losing the gigantic audience Y7 earned for them.

That said, I don't find the game disappointing. In fact, for a AA game, I can't even call it short. Not when one or two of the mainline RGG releases have had roughly the same final longevity. I'm saying that since I went into the game understanding it was priced below AAA for a reason, I walked away without disappointment.

Maybe my mistake was expecting something of the same quality as the previous games. If I'd known I had to lower my standards I wouldn't be so disappointed. Sorry if that sounded passive aggressive, it wasn't meant to be.

Still I didn't find the price to be any indicator. It was actually the most expensive one yet.

its alright
Tbh it being originally made as a dlc hurt its scope and development

RGG stated that this was just a small side story before the full sequel of Infinite Wealth and they only spent 6 months on it. We were actually lucky to get it as they were considering a short, episode-length interlude instead.

It's unfortunate that you had high expectations and that ruined your experience. My expectations were pretty low and I just wanted more game and lore behind the events after 6, so this was a massively enjoyable win on my part. Was only £30 for me and included the DLC.

When they officially announced the game, they said that it was smaller in scale respecting the main entries. I like it that they put more side content to compensate for the short story. I miss chinchironin / Cee-lo though.

The game isnt bad at any level, but to charge this price for it is pretty much stealing. Thats whats wrong with this.

It's too expensive, it cost 50 bucks for me, 30 bucks would have been perfect, 40 at MOST.

For 50 bucks I can accept a shorter main story and only 1 city but I DO expect a good number of unique substories etc. which just aren't there.

It was kind of known to be a very smaller, side-game designed as a bridge leading into Infinite Wealth though. It was all up and down from the announcement and in the marketing.
It's literally called 'Gaiden' too.

That said I do agree that the RPP asking price is absurd as a result. Glad it was a day 1 Gamepass release though and I imagine most of us probably just went that route.

I guess you guys are right, and they said it would be smaller. What hurts isn't that this is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. It's not. If it was I'd just not play it. It feels more like a great game that's had half its content cut out. It could've easily been the best of them all if given the proper amount of budget and dev time. Instead it feels like something slapped together quickly to hype people up for Y8, which ironically I don't even care about because of the turn based combat.

Huh, you made me look up the word gaiden and it means "side story". I always assumed it meant something cool and badass.

Where y'all getting it for less than MSRP before launch?

There's regional pricing on Steam but you can also buy keys from third party sellers (for example kinguin) that are usually cheaper. You can also play the full game without additional cost if you have a Gamepass subscription.

doubt it since this is a biggest launch for a rgg game on steam
would have sold more if it was cheaper
