I would disagree on that note. In my opinion there are several reasons not to pick up a 7th char:
1. an additional mouth to feed.
2. additional weapons and wounds to mend. (except of course if you give him a sling and shield in the HD version).
3. shared experience points. this means that your main group levels slower.
I usually have an easier time completely without an NPC. especially in the beginning when food comes in limited resource, you don't want a 7th mouth to feed.
