"FAILED TO START GAME (UNKNOWN ERROR)"
I it says "preparing to start for first time" then I get an error message that says "failed to start game (unknown error) check support" when I try to install the game. I have it downloaded but it refuses to install I guess.

This I've tried:

deleted then, re-downloaded the game and tried again, didn't work.

Did the window key + R %appdata% thing but the MKKE folder isnt there.

I also "verified the integrity of the game cache" and rebooted

I googled it and one guy was able to fix it http://steamcommunity.com/app/237110/discussions/0/666828126753823601/ But I have windows 8.1 and idk the steps to do what he did on windows 8.1

If other people (myself included) are able to launch the game without any issues, the problem is indeed in your end. That's the way PC gaming works; sometimes you have to google a thing or two.

One general tip I can give you is to always check PCGamingWiki first for any problems you might have, here's the link for the MKKE page: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_Komplete_Edition

If you actually want to try and fix the issue you're having, use google or tell us what's wrong and someone may be able to help you. If you just want a refund I'll just tell you what I tell everyone else who's crying about it on the forums: contact the damn support, we can't do anything about a refund request.

^^ This right here.

Also, if you want a seamless experience buy a console. That's who they're for. No shame in that.
If you want to game on a PC than there is more involved so I suggest you get used to things not necessarily working out of the box, stop complaining, and try to fix the issue. We'll help.

Thank you for your willingness to help, I was very frustrated when I wrote the original comment haha. I didn't see anything in the fourms with my exact problem

As far as I know, the Windows + R fix is for a display driver issue having to do with DirectX. I'm reasonably sure that the reason there is know MKKE folder there is because you haven't yet run the program (that is, it just fails to run at all).

Okay, here are two possible solutions to your problem (originally posted by [OG]Tag|[B4K] on the forums). He had the same issue as you have: Failed to start (unknown error). Try these and let us know how this goes.

"When steam attempts to install the game, it needs to create an cache on temp folder, but sometimes the system doesn't give this folder the proper permissions, so follow this instructions:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa545781%28v=cs.70%29.aspx

and try to run the instalation again.

worked like a charm for me, hope does the same

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the alternative solution, which essencially is the same, but through another path:

I send it to Steam support when i created a ticket, they ignored it, but anyways, here it is

the game requires Visual C++ 2008, right? (a solution that you do have on help pages on steam) well, the problem is that my system was not letting me install it, therefore i could not play the game, what i had to do is grant permissions to my Temp folder to solve a 2203 error:

http://www.sevenforums.com/software/63211-how-i-solved-error-2203-a.html

this allowed me to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 and the game run smoothly right after."

You can also try reinstalling the redistributable directly that ships with the game and see if it throws and error. It's located in:

\steamapps\common\MortalKombat_KompleteEdition\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2008

within your steam folder.

I already found this guy using google but I don't know how to do steps 2 or 5. Do they make sense to you? As I said I'm a casual gamer, Im not a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥ as I built this computer and have grown up around technology I just can't understand those instructions :(
Christopher Apr 17, 2015 @ 7:31pm
Gotcha~ I somehow missed the fact that I linked you to the same thread. So sorry!

I can see how those instructions might be a little confusing as they're specifically for Windows Server. The principle is the same but a number of the important bits look a little different. I do understand those steps and will be happy to help with them, but before we go that route there's something else we can try.

If you can, please try directly installing the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables that came with the game. You can locate them in:

(your-steam-folder)\steamapps\common\MortalKombat_KompleteEdition\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2008

Run both the installers found in that folder as an administrator. One is the 32 bit and the other is the 64 bit version of the redistributable, but having both won't harm your computer in any way. If both installations finish without an error try to run the game again. If there is an error, please take note of it and let us know what it is.

"Error 997.Overlapped I/O operation is in progress" when I run vcredist_x64 and same error when I run vcrdist_x86

I feel like we're getting closer and I appreciate your help so much!

I googled the error and downloaded a hot fix from Microsoft for the issue for windows 8.1x64 here: http://support2.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=3000988&kbln=en-us

but when I try to install the hotfix I get an error that says "the update is not applicable to your computer" error.
Christopher Apr 20, 2015 @ 4:26pm
Alright~ it seems that we may have found the problem. Progress! :B1: Three things to try:

1. I've been assuming you have your computer fully updated at the moment. If not, please install any updates available through Windows Update and reboot. If you weren't up to date, try reinstalling the redistributables after the update.

2. Please check to see if your computer has the following hotfixes already installed: KB2918614. This hotfix is out of date and is known to cause the 997 error if it remains installed on your system after newer updates have been applied. You can check this by going to "Add or remove programs" in your control panel and searching for the name of the hotfix. Here's a graphic to show you what I mean:

https://support.pixlr.com/hc/en-us/article_attachments/201440220/KB2918614.png

It may not be there, but we're just checking to be thorough. If it is, please remove it, restart your computer and try to install the redistribuatbles again

3. The last solution is resetting the permissions on your "temp" folders as we were talking about earlier. We'll start by checking the permissions on this folder:

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Temp

Follow these instructions to do so.

-----------------------------------------------------

-Open Explorer

-Right under the title bare are five tabs: File, Home, Share, View, and Manage. Please select the "View" tab and check the checkbox for "Hidden Items"

Figure 1

-Navigate to "C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local" then right click on "Temp" and select "Properties"

-Select the Security tab. You should see a list of users and user groups on the system. Check to see that at least the SYSTEM user, your account, and the Administrators group have "full control"

Figure 2

IF any of these three groups does not have full control, highlight that user and click the edit button. From here you can change the permissions of the user or group. Make sure full control is selected. Word of warning here... do not use this functionality lightly. You can lock yourself out of files and folders entirely this way.

-After your done, reboot and try running the redistributable installer again

Thank you for the very clear and helpful instructions, unfortunately it did not work

1. Computer is fully updated through windows update.

2. Checked, KB2918614 not installed.

3. Navigated to "C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local" found temp folder, selected "properties", gave everything "full control", Rebooted, ran the redistributable installer (both) and got the same "Error 997.Overlapped I/O operation is in progress"
Christopher Apr 21, 2015 @ 7:02am
Sorry to hear we haven't got you fixed up yet. At least we're making progress and are narrowing the possibilities. To summarize, we know that your user account, the "SYSTEM" account and the "Administrators" user group didn't have full control over your temp folder in %appdata% which is abnormal.

I just want to verify a few things with you real quick. If you haven't been doing the following steps from here on out, please start doing so.

1) Make sure to run the redistributables as an Administrator by right clicking the files and chooseing "Run as Administrator"
2) Please disable any third party antivirus you may be running while trying to install

Now, there is another folder that we may need to change the permissions for. This one is "C:\Windows\Installer" and is not normally visible unless you change a setting in the control panel. Here are the steps to do so:

-Open the control panel "Folder Options" by either using Windows 8 search or opening the control panel folder. If you don't see it, you may need to change the way you are viewing the control panel by changing the view mode to "Large icons." You can change this by locating the drop down menu on the top right of the control panel. See the figure below for a visual representation of this

http://i.imgur.com/Rxd4xAw.jpg

-Inside "Folder Options" are three tabs: General, View and Search. Select the View tab, and make sure that "Show hidden files, folders, and drives is SELECTED and "Hide protected operating system files" is DESELECTED. See the figure below

http://i.imgur.com/Oj9t0SN.jpg

-Click "Apply" and close Folder Options.

-Open an Explorer window and navigate to "C:\Windows"

-Locate the folder called "Installer" and change the permissions (using the steps from my previous post) so that your user account, the SYSTEM account and the Administrators user group have full control.

-Then, attempt to run the redistributables again. If it fails, check that the folder we changed before ("C:\Users\<Username>\Appdata\Local\Temp") still has the permissions set correctly (the system may have changed them after the last reboot) and if they aren't, fix them and try again

Hopefully this fixes the issue! :bkey:
