All these games have suspend/sleep features, not to mention you can simply pause the game
The original haunted castle also has save/load and rewind
haunted castle revisited does not, but it does have continues on game over, and a level select in the main menu. I didn't look before I finished it so it might just be the levels or sections you've beaten first.
And it does give you the little crown on the menu for completion
It's not the same thing as save states if that's the feature you're seeking. But functionally a remind feature would let anyone who's terrible at these games do even hard mode with relative ease with only bosses putting up a remote challenge looking for the right openly.
