Europa Universalis IV

Europa Universalis IV

EU4 keeps crashing (ubuntu)
Hi!
Iḿ getting kind of tired of this now. Im playing as Spain, have gotten quite large now, but after around 1700 the game has started crashing more or less constantly. I reload the game but mostly within a month the game crashes. Just shuts down and steam syncs with the cloud. I reload and the same thing happens again and again. I tried to shut of messages and lower game speed but still crashes.
My computer has the sufficent hardware to run the game and I have actually never experienced any crashes prior to this. Lately the game has been getting slower, also have been experiencing some lag. But now as I said around 1700 its more or less unplayable.

Help anyone? Anyone else experiencing the same problems?

Cheers

There is a quick workaround for some of the problems here. I also had two Portugal games in Ironman that both crashed at the end of a month (in very different years).

On a Mac go to your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/
folder and in messagetypes_custom.txt replace all yes with no (make a copy first). That disables all the event messages.

Then reload your game, pass the critical date that crashes, then save, change the above file back with your backed up copy, load into the new date and done.

This will work for all crashs caused by event popups or logs of events. Some of the crashes in the forum are caused by faults other than the message types. For me, this rescued two precious Ironman games.
Found the specific events that causing trouble (arch linux).

messagetype.txt in the interfaces folder. Change the popup=yes to popup=no.

TRIGMOD= { to_me= { popup=no } } TRIGMODLOST= { to_me= { popup=no } }

Thank you acerbic!
This worked perfectly :)

This worked perfectly for me as well (Mac OSX for me)

This did not solve the problem for me (Windows 7). I have tried disabling a bunch of the popups in-game, which also hasn't worked.
I have a mac and have game crashes all the time. Could I get someone to step by step explain the process of changing it for me? I dont want to break something ...
The Game started to crash for me when the month is changing even tho i'm still in 1459.

First time it crashed from start of may, then i somehow passed that but now it crashes from the start of june.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (64bit)

the console log is saying first when you start the game multiple times that it's not finding some 32bit steam library, but still it starts. Then after the crash the only thing in console is Segmentation fault core dumped...
Yeah mine crased at the start of each month. Bug seems to be erratic, one day the game seems to be fine the next day its crashing every damn change of the month. Is it something with the patch? Cause there was no issue like this b4....
It is still CTDing even after 1.2.2, it is much worse in Asia as started a few new Ming games that CTD on December 1st 1444 and will not progress. Can get nearly 50 years in playing in Europe, but then get a crash again at the beginning of a month and that is that.

Found that loading the cloud save in a windows installation (VMware Fusion) playing through that month, and then resyncing seems to fix it, but it does sometimes reappear.

Going to try the messagetypes.txt changes posted above.
Another workaround is to simply go into the message options menu and disable some of the messages. It seems to me to be (one of) the top half amount of messages under "all" that cause the crashes. Then when the 1st of the month has passed, go back and reenable the messages (reset). A bit tedious, but at least it lets me play the game until the patch is out.
Im just gonna wait for the patch. Hope paradox will fix the problem.
Have to say, this is starting to get frustrating...:-) My Japan game is now into 1600's but is now crashing pretty regularly (on new iMAC, so can only be the patched game... I have not had any MODs installed). I can get past the crash by loading my save file as someone else, passing the date, saving and then starting... but sometimes I walk into the next error a few years later or a few decades. My Byzantium game before the patch hit 1700's with no crashes.

That's because that fix is for a problem that ONLY happens under Mac and Linux. Your crash is an unmrelated issue. Please star a fresh thread in the Paradox EU4 Tech Support forum, with full problem and system detaiuls, and I'll try to help you there.
I have tried to fix it in the way above ( TRIGMOD= { to_me= { popup=no } } TRIGMODLOST= { to_me= { popup=no } }, but it does not fix the problem on my mac - hope the next patch will come soon!

How did you find the specific events causing the crash?

I tried that fix under Ubuntu 12.10 x64 and no luck. I also tried turning off all popups with the game's GUI and no luck. Anyone know where to find an error log? If I run the game from console, all it says is "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" when it crashes to desktop.
