And in case you're confused like I was, Xara helped me out the other day! Once you ask for fleet basing rights, the extension of your range will not be shown where you would expect it to. It simply is shown when you mouse over "colonizable" places.
imo most of the early colonization for france is eating morocco then mali ( and both are ultra easy targets, being pope and calling the crusade on them will also help
also as france and with this strategy, i dont take exploration ideas, but expansion ideas, its enough when you own most of morocco and mali
another thing, if you can get england to cancel treaties with portugal, and make portugal your "best friend forever", that will greatly help, best ally you can have to survive the next 2 centuries
once you have a core in ifni, a colonial range advisor will also help ( but owning mali is easier and cheaper :p )
.. and instead of taking exploration, expansion would be better choise..
