Upgrade ships
Do I really have to upgrade outdated ship models by destroying them and then building new ones? I have a fleet of about 70 ships of which about 50 are outdated. So it would take forever. Is there really no comfort function to do it quickly?

They are significantly different hull designs and layouts each time. You can't retrofit a galleon like that. It doesn't make any sense. So yes, you need to decommission the old ships and commision new ones. Build the naval improvements that increase construction speed

What the game does need is a sort / split function that lets you remove *outdated* ships from a group. Having to examine a list of 50 light ships to see which ones are the old ones sucks, especially since the "type" sort seems to go floozy.

Thanks for the response. Paradox really should work something out there. So then let's go to work...

You hit the nail on the head there. I don't know how many minutes I've spent sorting out the old ships from the new ones!

In my experience the quickest method to upgrading your ships is to pick a fight with the British navy. You'll find yourself making new ships in no time;)

In my Byzantium game, that would be France, even if my fleet is ~30% bigger they always beat me. :D

I just keep the old ships and gradually add new ones to my navy as I expand and my force limits grow. When I'm two ship levels ahead I might scrap the most outdated ships, but generally I don't see the point in spending all those ducats.

You also can capture a lot of enemy ships in battle. Sometimes I even get ships that are ahead of what I can currently build, since I spend a lot of time behind in tech to maximize my monarch points.

except for light ship trade power..

When you have 50-100-150 or more light ships in a trade node, scrapping them all for a 0.5 to 1.0 (or whatever) trade power boost isn't necessarily going to pay for itself for a long long time, unless you have a huge load of cost discounts. When they get two upgrades behind, yea, then you probably want to crank out new ones
