Mac plays very laggy, unplayable
Was really looking forward to this game, but it is way too laggy. I've tried the lowest settings with everything turned off. I even went into the setting.txt and edited it to not show sky or water, run in windowed, and lower resolution and it still lags. I think the problem is the clouds rolling in the fog of war and the animations on the flags/units. If paradox could release a patch to have lower graphics settings this would be great. Crusader Kings 2 worked just fine for my mac but EU4 won't.

I have the same issue... CK2 works fine, but for EU4 it's impossible...

I suspect it might be because of GPU memory need. I'm running a wooden 9600GT with just half a gig of memory... CK2 ran 10/10, but this lags some and GPU mem is 100% full all the time. How much GPU mem your mac has?

Its says you need 1gig on mac.

I am so bummed. I love EU3 and was really excited about this game. I agree with ChunKyz and brreed. I have 4GB of memory. CK2 plays just fine. But this is terrible. I turned off all of the visual settings, and it did nothing. Sooooo sad.

how much vram do you have? Game specifications say 1 gig. CK2 is an older engine and a different game.
"1024MB graphics memory required " if you didn't read the requirements you only have yourself to blame.

@Bitcrusher - you are 100% right. I misread the requirements and I do not have 1G of vram. :( Unfortunately, I'm on an iMac and so I can't even upgrade the graphics card. Oh well.

If anyone has any tips on configuration settings for faster gameplay for those of us on older hardwear - I am sure you'd find a welcoming audience.

Thanks!

Try disabling anti-aliasing, which is most likely to be a huge consumer of vram. If you're running a 27" iMac you probably run at 1440p, which itself will eat vram... you might consider trying 1080p in that case (if it's something visually acceptable).

I glanced at the graphics options in the demo but don't really remember what all was there. In addition to AA, I would just turn everything to minimum and see how it runs. If it's okay, then start ticking things up as far as performance allows.

Go to My Documents>Paradox Interactive>Europa Universalis IV>Then edit the settings.txt file so draw_terrain=no this will look weird and the land will be black but it reduces the lag by a lot.

Check out my guide, just do the reverse of everything I say on it. It is on steam. Also the font mod is really awesome.

It is possible to upgrade the graphics in many iMacs but it is not for the faint of heart and will void the warranty unless done by a certified Apple technician.
