Interface / Text Size
Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone, especially people in the beta, knew of an option to increase the UI or text size of any aspects of the game. I do have worse eyesight than most people (legally blind), but I am worried the game will be unplayable.

For some reference, I can read Civ 5 text with a little bit of effort. Rome Total War is pretty easy, but Shogun Total war 2 is absolutely tiny. It is playable, but not comfortably, and that really discourages me from playing, unfortunately. AI Wars was the worst by default, but you could increase the text size a ton, which was great.

I have been watching Quill18's gameplay videos, and noticed that I haven't had trouble with reading numbers, but the text in menus is tough. I realize that the resolution will be better and therefore clearer on the actual game versus a video playback, but I was just thinking about size ratio. I have also noticed that pop up text is much easier to read than in menu (like Stability and Expansion, Ideas, etc.). Paradox may have also improved base UI size and in-menu text since Quill's build version, which could solve my problem.

So please just let me know if you have any insight! Thanks! Can't wait for release.

It's hard to judge that sort of thing with a YouTube video, but I have no trouble reading text in the Crusader Kings 2 interface, and since EU4 uses the same engine, I'm sure it will be fine.

It was said that you could mod the fonts, so you can make/download a large font and use that. The devs said it would work, but some things may look a bit weird. I'm sorry I can't find where they said that though sorry.

If worst comes to worst, what you can do is pay windowed at a lower resolution, then use a screen magnifier to enlarge that section of the screen. It would kind of suck, but it would work.

Thanks very much for the info. It would certainly make sense that the fonts could be modded. I am not exactly sure how to go about that, but I bet someone around here could do it as a favor / I'll give them a free game or something. I don't mind things looking a bit weird if it means getting to play like the normal folk.

You can change the size of the text characters in the .ini files. However, the UI won't scale so it'll look a bit wonky.

Thank you so much for responding. I was hoping, but not expecting, for a developer to see this.

As long as I can read everything then I can put up with a bit of wonkiness, as long as the UI itself doesn't cover up text after I try to enhance it. Maybe someone could make a 5 - 10% UI scale up for me or something like that if necessary. I would be willing to compensate them for their time.

I am not sure exactly how to access and manipulate .ini files to manually increase the text size, but I imagine I could Google it to find out. Certainly don't want to break something in the game. I am not sure if you know off the top of your head, but about what point size do you think the text is and how far do you think I could enhance it before UI problems arise?\\

Thank you again for your help. I just hope I can figure this out! Really looking forward to next week!

I'm exactly in the same position as you are (legal blindness), I bought CK II and I can't even play it since I can't read sh*t. In EU 3 you can mod fonts, but it is not very easy. I really hope lowering resolution won't blur the font like it does in EU 3.

I commented on quil18's videos and one guy told me that YT makes things harder and he also told me that devs said thay were going to make fonts "clean" with low res, so I guess "we are in luck"

Oh and btw, changing things on inis is very, very easy. You can't break a game just changing something in ini files, you just have to change it back if you don't like the result. So don't worry about that.

Cheers

Ha yeah that is a problem I too face often with strategy games.

I do hope we are in luck there. Guess we will have to wait and see. If worst comes to worst I am ready to bribe someone for a mod ha

Can you provide more instructions? I've looked all over and I can't even find an ini file in any of europa's folders.

In \SteamApps\common\Europa Universalis IV Demo\gfx\fonts there are a whole load of fonts, you can shange those if you wish. The .fnt files can be opened in a text editor like Notepad, and the .tga files can be opened in gimp (I think). It is 3:41am here though so I can't really help further sorry.
