A much more reliable way is to trigger the event The Awakening of the Norse Faith[eu4.paradoxwikis.com], because that event only has an MTTH of 2 years. It needs animist zealots to occupy a province in scandinavia, but you can reliably achieve that by owning Iceland and colonizing a province in greenland and chain of provinces from greenland to an animist province in south america. Then you can trigger animist zealots in south america and let them island hop to iceland. They will relocate from one province to the next as long as they are not blockaded and the gap is not too big(I think the maximum is 200 pixel on the provinces.bmp)
You can gain independence from Denmark by declaring an independence war and winning it. But that would be very difficult if you don't get anybody to support your independence. But with a few strong supporters it can be doable if you know how manage AI allies in wars.
It might be possible to grow stronger by colonizing but that takes a long time and you might get integrated
Or you can gain independence if pretender rebels enforce their demands on you, but that would require some luck to get such an event and that the AI doesn't kill the pretenders before they occupy your capital(you can help the pretenders if they siege your capital by sending a small force to start a battle and then sortie from the fort).
The Kalmar union mechanics might help, but I'm not too familiar with them
I did facepalm myself. Was thinking about Victoria 3, doh.. sorry -)
