How to choose rivals as Wallachia? Are the "devs" serious about the "new" rival system?
Just bought EU4 on sale because I like to play something different once in a while. I'm familiar with the gameplay from (ck, eu3) and after watching a few guides on Wallachia I started off Ironman.

I wasn't able to do ♥♥♥♥. Either Hungary or the Ottomans attack me and I can't pick any rivals because tech too low and no time anyway. I tried different approaches and I always end before 1500. I want my money back.

wallachia is a pretty hard nation to play as a begginer, try another nation. when you get better maybe go back and play Wallachia, when playing nations such as those you need to play the diplo game and strike when the iron is hot

I understand your point. I'm passed that. Ironman has achievements, why would I wanna play otherwise? I've tried so many ways, built myself financially, diplomatically and they still want my 2 provinces. I mananged to fend off the otomans for a while and tried so many strikes when Hungary or the Ottomans were weak. It shouldn't be impossible. I just don't understand how it could've been possible a while ago and now not.

Try to ally urself with either poland or autria. they tend to be ur only hope and then dow on bosina/serbia asap. take the stab hit if need be. vessalise instead of outright annexation so u dont have to deal with rebels. Thats wat i did for my byzantium campaign who i will say is a even harder start tks to the ottomans mission.

He's not saying anything about ironman, he's talking about striking when the time is right. Gotta get some strong allies to fend off your neighbours and potentially grab some land early on to get stronger. Also, game mechanics have changed quite a bit since the beginning so the guides you have watched might just be horribly out of date and you need different strategies.

If you can't grasp that, then playing as Wallachia is not for you I guess and I'd recommend going for a different nation instead

You can only rival nations of approximately equal strength, and the distance at which you can rival someone depends on your own size and power. A large nation will be able to choose rivals from further away.

Wallachia is well into the "difficult" category, possibly bordering on the "very difficult". The only way I could see to do it would be to ally Austria, which would pretty much require you to start with a level one 'statesman' advisor.

Austria is very powerful and 9 times out of 10 will start out as a rival of Hungary. If that's the case, you should be able to get them to join a war, in which case they should be able to steamroll hungary. Hungary often allies France, so you may need to move quite fast to catch Hungary before the hundred years war finishes. Try to bring in some minor allies (Bosnia is a good ally, just don't get a royal marriage because you will want to conquer them later).

Unfortunately, Hungary is also Catholic and thus its lands will be a pain in the arse to govern. Just raise autonomy and let them do their own thing. All you want from the war, really, is access to the rest of the Balkans (Serbia and Bosnia) which will give you more expansion opportunities.

Arrakis, If I ask for an up-to-date entry-guide for Wallachia will you be able to help then? I'm sure you know more than me. I'm not saying it's not hard or Wallachia is not for me. Trust me, it's more for me than for you. Try to give an opinion AFTER you try Wallachia on Hard as well.

It's way harder without the rivals. I have no time. They always get missions to Vassalize me and even if they lose wars they still come back and ♥♥♥♥ me up.

That's why you need allies, even allies who won't actively help you expand because they consider you too minor will still serve as a deterrant. Even the Ottomans will be wary of engaging both Austria and Poland at the same time.

Having rivals really wouldn't make much of a difference. It would mean you could take slightly more land from your rivals if you won a war and fabricating claims would be a bit easier, but you'd still have to win those wars which is the underlying problem. The only really significant thing rivals would do for you is to give you a small opinion bonus with nations with the same rival, potentially making it slightly easier to ally Austria or Poland, but starting with a statesman advisor will actually do more.

Then I must be having some bad luck getting the worst missions and events...
Narf 2014 年 12 月 8 日 上午 8:26
Don't get too hung-up on missions. Those are proposals of what to tackle next, and are by no means something you have to do. Sometimes doing something entirely different, maybe even the opposite of what missions would suggest, can be the best choice.
That said, I agree with the others that getting good allies is your best bet. I did not play Wallachia, but Byzantinum, but it is pretty much always the same concept. Look at who are the enemies of your threats. Then make their enemies your allies and keep relations good, because that way it will be highly likely they will come to your aid if attacked. Even a defensive alliance that will not help you in the wars you declare on others can help keep you safe from bigger threats like Hungary or the Ottomans. Poland, like the others said, is pretty much always a good bet.

Wallachia is a sitting duck! A road apple!

Yea let's nerf the smaller countries more!

All I hear is a noob crying. Go play a scenario without ironman so you can go back to your saves and right what you wronged. Get some practice and knowlege about the game before you say its unfair that a country 10x the size of your country crushed you.

No, instead let's buff your home country and nerf the one that historically stomped it into the ground because it hurts your feelings. Moron.
