England: Should I maintain an alliance with Portugal?

Just wondering if it's at all a good idea to use up a diplo slot with Portugal. In my England/Great Britain game I currently have Portugal and Scandinavia as allies, Prussia in a PU, and Saxony as a vassal. I'm also currently leader of the Protestant League, and I am very eager to become Emperor, so I'm probalby going to need some strong allies to fight Austria and the Commonwealth. Unfortunately I also have to break up Bohemia since they now own most of Hungary, and I find the awkward borders too abhorrent to tolerate. So, should I maintain relations with Portugal?

I don't see why you need them with that strength already, unless you plan on messing with Castile.

I am guessing Spain would be a more desirable ally.
If you can get France on your side you're basically set, though. From what I've heard France tends to side against the Catholic league, out of spite against Austria, so that is definitely a possibility.

When going to war with Austria (or just any HRE member, because Austria's usually the Emperor they'll protect them) always ally France and Frances Allies. 9/10 Burgandy will break apart, and France and Austria will have several feudes over the Burgandish territory. Even if that doesn't happen, France will be locked into this life-long rivalry with the HRE because it will most of the time expand into Holy Roman Territory (I have yet to have a file where France DOESN'T conquer atleast 1 Savoy Province) and even in some alternet universe where none of that happens, a Blobed France is pretty much the only country that can take on Austria one on one.

Thanks for the replies! Alas, I cannot ally France as we hate each other, mostly because I still own Calais and the Benelux countries. This is probably why France is neutral in the Leagues. I'm fairly certain that Spain hates me, so that's a no. But now that I think about it, Muscovy is actually a potential ally, especially since that they share my dynasty, courtesy of Scandinavia's royal marriage with them. Yeah, the Lancaster dynasty literally rules over every major northern country and practically owns the Baltic. And, they're in the Protestant League, so that will help. I am, however, a little annoyed that they're still Muscovy, but for some the reason the Golden Horde is huge and stopping them from conquering Kazan.
