1) get new land
2) get the quantity ideas group, the other military idea groups are also fantastic but quantity improves size, cost and manpower

but it only improves size if you unlock it completely....i think there is an idea which gives a bigger army sooner....

Army force limit, as far as I understand, is based on your base tax. So, to gain a larger army force limit conquer more land that (preferably) has higher base tax... (unless said province is owned by France)

also, decereasing autonomy on conquered provinces after some time really helps aswell.

Got the same problem; I am playing as Austria/Netherlands/Germany and was lucky enough to get a PU with Russua (after I won a succesion war against Ethopia). After finally integrating Russia, I had c. 350k Troops, but only a force limit of c. 300k. I dispanded c. 25k troops, and am building some lvl 5 and 6 military building (which increase force limit by +2 each). When the local autonomy in the Russian provinces goes down, this should get better. Also I need a land connection between my Capital and Asia, so that the Asian provinces are (hopefully!) no longer consider colonies and can have a lower autonomy than 75%.

conquer sweden.....if they aren´t allied with the commonwealth.... conquer gotland in the Baltic Sea and the neighbour provinces next to your russian land..... through it you can have a direct sea connection if you make it correct... 1 war would be enough....take gotland, Nyland and Viborg then you should have your connection..

from Ostpreussen to gotland form gotland to nyland ....viborg would be optional because you already have a sea connection but it would be saver if nyland isn´t completly isolated...

Actually, I am allied with Sweden and have the Commonwealth as rival. Initially, they helped me against the Ottomans, but after Danzig and the Teutonic Order succesfully revolted and I used the opportunity to take Danzig and Ostrpreussen, they have started to hate me. After the rivaled me, I switsched one of my rivals from GB to Commonweatlth. I am pretty much decided, on waging an imperialist war against the Commonwealth to take the four baltic coast provinces needed for the land connection. This shouldn't be too risky.. the Commonwealth is only allied to Spain. Since Spain is leading in Score, though (the lucky bastard inherited Portugal), I need to beat them anyway.

Army force limit is based on your base tax and temples give basetax. so building tempels helps (if you build them on the coast they also provide navel forcelimit)

Temples no longer increase base tax. They increase your tax income by a flat amount.
