I'd presume it's related to the new mechanics for the treaty of tordesillas. As I understand it, you just have to be catholic and colonize a colonial region. Bear in mind that the "claim" has no effect on anyone who isn't Catholic. Protestants don't care who the pope says Brazil belongs to.

Somehow this claiming is not working for me in La Plata. It automatically claimes Colonial Columbia but even though I had the first colony in La Plata nothing happened.

one colony isn't enough. You need a colonial nation there, which is formed after 5colonies.

Okay, here's a question. I've been playing as Portugal and have focused on building a colonial empire. I'm way ahead of the game when it comes to exploration, and I've colonized both that little province on the edge of Africa and those islands between Africa and South America. I've started a colony in Brazil. Yet when I explored the Caribbean, I found it was claimed by Spain, despite the fact that they haven't even started to settle a single province. This is true of Colombia, La Plata, and Eastern America as well. Is this a bug or something, because it has basically ruined my entire game. If it is, I'm going to submit it, but first I want to see if anyone has an explanation for it.

I have not encountered it. So it seems like a bug.
AI tends to have weird stuff going on. Was in a war the other night and the AI just makes 140% WS peace deals :S Good thing I wasnt at 100% WS otherwise I had no choice but to accept.

This is a bug thats been in for a while. If it seems that a nation has no claim (no colonial nation), then if you colonize a province in the region anyway, there should be no impact from the treaty.
