How exactly do I form Spain?
Can't do it peacefully since Aragon hates me, and in order to do it militarily, I need to conquer their capital (Barcelona). However, I cannot get the option to actually select that Decision for some reason, and I can't get a casus belli on Barcelona (Aragon) without it, and can't get it after a war anyways since it's their capital.

You have to conquer every single other province around a nations capital to be able to claim the capital in a war - that or complete annexation. You can then also form a claim on the capital once it is isolated.

Would that island across from Barcelona count as part of their surroundings?

nope only land conections count.

The easiest way to form spain is to get a ruler of opposite sex than aragon on your throne or on his throne before 1500. With this the iberian wedding event triggers and aragon get's under a personal union with you. Doesn't matter how much he liked you before. With this you can use the diplomatic national mission to form spain.

Are you positive? Only after taking that island was I able to actually try and get Barcelona in a peace offering.

Ally with France and crush Aragon on the Iberian Peninsula and then you can form Spain Militarily, you also need to take out Granada.
France hates me (for no reason), and it's still like -200 relationship even after sending someone to improve relationship, apparently.

Jeah could have bet so. Maybe i mistook it with westernizing, where a land contection didn't count. Will test it for myself now again :> Only formed spain 1time with conquering aragon so far. Normaly i do it diplomaticaly.

As Shoki pointed out, the easiest way by far to form Spain is to get the Iberian wedding event to trigger. You don't need to have positive relations with Aragon for it to trigger, they just need to either be in a regency or have a ruler of the opposite sex to yours. There's an element of luck to the whole thing, but if it does trigger it gives you an automatic personal union with Aragon, allowing you to form Spain diplomatically once the other requirements are met (Granada fully conquered and 100 legitimacy, I believe).

This is one thing that bothers me about Spain, they have some huge advantages but a lot of it is based on luck.

If France has rivalled you or wants your provinces, you may have long-term problems. France is going to get very, very powerful as the game goes on and even with the whole Iberian peninsula united you will probably not be able to match them. You might be able to keep them out of war with a strong alliance of other European states, but those states will also drag you into their wars.

This is correct. I just did it the other day in a hard diffilculty game and I'm in the 3rd war of independence, trying to overthrow some idiot Aragonian pretender.
This is because you need adm. tech. at level 10 before you can form Spain.

Tested it for myself now and i can forge a claim on barcelona when aragon still have the island.

Conquerings works too. So as i said only land conections have to been conquered to take the capital.

Maybe you tried to get something else in the war too!?
If you want to conquer the capital you can't take anything else (except you fully anex ofc).

I wish I could have done it that way, but Aragon hates me too.

I have no idea what I'm doing, so it's possible. Either way, somehow France goof'd and lost all their military power and the HRE and I kicked them out of the way, I took Barcelona and all is good. Thank God. Thanks for your help, though.

My current game as Castile i kept trying to off my heirs before the turn of the century to get a female ruler since Aragon had a male ruler and heir, went through 6 heirs in a row named "Enrique"....hunting accident, no problem, pull out another Enrique....the black death, no problem, grab another Enrique from the wine cellar! Finally gave up and started to take provinces by force and now just need to take Bacelona. Of course had a peace treaty, got called into a war against Aragon, war ended by war leader, I get to wait another 10 years or take big stability hit. Peace almost up, another ally goes to war with Aragon, etc...
Guess by the time i actually have Barcelona i might have the tech level to form Spain at least (yeah, those great Castilian rulers with their 0/0/0 or 1/0/1 MPs...).
