I guess the most efficient thing would still be to beat the Ottomans early, even if the mission tree suggests that You could also easily defeat Naples to get the power base there. Handycap are the bad privileges, which You want to get rid off.
Anyway, as Triple G said, there's nothing complex involved. Smack the Ottomans down, get rid of the bad privileges, and go crazy crushing everything. I no longer remember details because the run was so simple and boring.
In the beginning having some catholic allies can be helpful. But after You´re set i would get rid of it as soon as possible - so after the first war with the Ottomans, as these are the main threat. If You won the first war and do that first, they´re weaker and You´re stronger - and if You go to Italy first, You also triple Your dev. In either case You could then also ally Muscovy - and You don´t really need the Knights, or the Papal states, or Hungary, or Poland to help You against the Ottos. If You don´t ally the knights, and have no good relations to them it means they would raid Your coast though...
All these initial privileges are bad - while this is at least has an upside. I guess. I mean i also only played the start of the campaign on this patch. Also it doesn´t prevent You from having catholic allies after You abolished it. You only don´t need to have them to get rid of the privilege, while it may come with a downside like opinion modifier. (i actually didn´t revoke it, only the army one before i quit the game, as i wasn´t in the mood to play a long game in the area again)
Like i would keep it when the decision at the start of the game appears, then build the 5 churches, and get rid of the catholic allies, and revoke the privilege.
But in general getting rid of all the three bad privileges should be a priority. And usually my expansion route would be like replacing the Ottomans anyways, so most of the catholic allies wouldn´t really help, because distance. Like taking Greece, Anatolia, Syria, the Mamluks - and then You´re probably great power no.1. While here with the mission tree there´s now the option to attack Naples with the pope, in the second they get independence - to then get more claims in Africa. But doing that means that the Ottos would grow a bit, while they wouldn´t attack You if You ally Muscovy.
