Can someone explain the HRE's religious leagues to me?
So, I'm playing as Austria. The religious leagues form in 1550 like they should and I join the Catholic side. The problem is, I have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of IA that can't be used due to the leagues being present. My question is: How do I end the religious turmoil in the HRE so I can get back to spending IA as soon as possible?

Thanks

Eventually the war will broke and one side wins. After that, you're back to using IA as usual.

What do you mean "the war will broke"? Do I have to declare war on the Protestant League's leader?

The religious war in HRE ends when the dominant league wins a defensive war with Religious Supremacy, thus making the dominant religion (Note: That doesn't mean which one is more common in HRE, it means the religion of the Emperor) official, OR if a league war ends without anyone claiming Religious Supremacy, which results in the Peace of Westphalia scenario.

So if the Catholic League wins the first league war with Religious Supremacy, that's that. If the Protestant League wins it that way, the dominant religion switches to protestant, but the Catholic League can try to yank it back by declaring another war. If the Protestant League wins the second war with Religious Supremacy, that makes the protestant faith official, and that's that. If the Catholic side does, rinse and repeat.

So basically, the dominant league must win a league war with Religious Supremacy, or any league war, at any time, needs to end without Religious Supremacy being declared on either side which will end the turmoil with the Peace of Westphalia (basically, no official faith, so religion plays no part in emperor elections and electorate grants anymore).

Also I think there's an event with a long MTTH that ends it with peace of Westphalia, but you likely don't want to wait that long.

Also also, if you SOMEHOW manage to get to the Erbkaisertum reform before the entire mess starts, the religious war will not happen at all, and the HRE will be in a Peace of Westphalia state.

Also also also, you can join whatever league if you're not Emperor, or the leader of the opposing league. You can even join either league as a non-member. Even if you're neither protestant nor catholic.

what Radne said, but aswell i think if there havent been a league war for 30 years then the peace of Westphilia event fires anyway

Like for most wars; the protestant leader will start the war when he believes he has a chance to win (when you're losing another war or don't have manpower...).

A strong Austria is your best way to defend, but the League war may never start. I prefer to play as Sweden.
