Calvary vs Infantry Speeds
My Friend and I were playing EU4 and we had a argument, that we could not solve, but still wanted to see what the answer to the question was.

For would an army go faster on the battle map if it consists of only horseman, with no infantry, or is movement speed global for all armies even if one does not have any infantry in it.

Well for starters an army consisting of entirely cavalry would most likely be destroyed in most combat scenarios unless you were ahead in military tech etc and it is ill advised. As far as movement speed infantry units have 1 pip speed base cavalry have 2, so cavalry travels faster. So by themselves they would traverse faster but if any other units such as artillery or infantry are in the army then the entire group moves at the lowest pip speed. However, with a leader his maneuver pips will decrease the time it takes for units to move from province to province and the units will use the leaders default speed in addition to their own but the cavalry would move faster than infantry if no infantry or artillery were present.

The reason why we were wondering was I thought that horseman conquistadors would move a lot faster than infantry, but thanks for the info!

In EU IV, all units move at the same speed between provinces. In battle, cavalry can attack from the flanks if no unit is in front of it.

At the strategic level, if you want to be realistic infantry would move long distances better than cavalry, and both would be much better than artillery. But this game doesn't even make a passing effort at realism wrt logistics.

I've seen similiar posts over at paradox forums regarding this idea. I have this idea as well, wanted cavalry to move faster than infantry. Fortunately i found a solution (single player only, not sure if it works of multiplayer).
Is that you create a mod (there are tutorials on how to do that). Once u have a mod with basic elements, you can add a defines folder under your mod.
EU4>mod>$your mod name$>common>defines
Create a defines file 00_mod name.lua.

Then you add the following code in the file:
NDefines.NMilitary.CAVALRY_SPEED = 2

and you're done.

Note: 2 means its twice as fast as infantry and arty. You can also change the speed of other units. simply change the cavalry_speed into infantry_speed. (i only tried 3 max, its fast enough im not sure what happens if you go higher, procees with your own discretion)

They all need to be the same speed from a balance perspective so that armies can catch each other up, if the number of horses in a army (like steppe hordes) increased the speed + general movement pips.

Otherwise its a lot of kiting and zippy armies unable to be caught unless cornered.

That would be fine if there was a way to effect cavalry movement speeds in mountains, swamps, ect.

well,im aware in Eu3 similiar things are implemented and it kinda affect gameplay negatively.
But my intention was to just get a bit of realistic aspect to the game by making cavalry faster than infantry for when u playing alone, and make the game more fun (to me personally).
However if you dont perfer this modification then u can disable the mod anytime.
But an option provided its always better than nothing
