Not sure about the Avg year it starts, but it can vary depending on how things go in the game. The event will start to trigger once reform desire hits 95%+.

Protestantism is usually around 1520, give or take a decade.
Reformation happens at least 15 years later, usually around 30 years.

historically the reforamtion started shortly after the black death with the schism and the concilar movement. at around 1507 Luther nailed his thesis on the wall on Wuttenburge church and the flood gates opened. Now in the game, reform desire must hit at least 95% and then an event triggers. Basically the game starts in 1453 so it is already at the height of prereformation. The events refelct this. So when your country reaches 95% reform desire after 1507 than you will get the event.

As a note, the reform desire is global, not tied to any specific country. The desire is effected by what every single country does. IE: those random events that usually follow the formula "Get something nice, and reform desire. Or get something not as nice, and not as much reform desire, or no reform desire" Fairly sure that like players, the AI is set to choose the short term benefit option.

Luther's 95 Theses were in 1517, not 1507. And the game starts in 1444, not 1453...

It depends on what you are meaning by when the reformation starts in game. there are two ways it starts.

1st is if you are looking for a game that the reformation has already started, pick a year after 1517 or so.

Or if you are asking in a current game you are playing when does it start, it can vary. If you go to your religion tab, you will see under the ammount of cardinals you control (im assuming your playing as a catholic) there will be both a catholic and protestant cross together with a percentage number, that is called the reformation desire. When that number get to 90% it becomes available to trigger at any time, though it is more likely to happen when the number gets higher, and the number is able to go above 100%, though that usually happens after the reformation has already triggered.

I also believe that however high the reform desire gets, the easier it is for the reformation to spread, but dont quote me on that detail yet.
