Becoming an Elector
So I've been trying to from the nation of Westphalia as The Hansa, but one of the requirements is my being an elector. However, due to my history of warmongering and unlawful territory, everyone in the HRE hates me. Any tips an how to become an elector? Is it ultimately just a matter of having good relations with the Emperor?

Of course, I understand that there needs to be an open elector spot.

It's a lot easier than it used to be, but you need to be fairly small.. no more than about 3 provinces maximum. If you're over that, you can release a vassal. The hard part is actually freeing up an elector slot. It helps a lot if there's a small nearby elector you can wipe out and then instantly release.

You also need an alliance with the Emperor, usually Austria.

Basically, plan to get it done early if it's something you need to do in your game..

Alternately, the HRE war can sometimes throw up some very odd situations regarding electors. Depending on how Protestantism spreads, you can end up with a catholic empire but very few catholic nations in the HRE. In this case, the Emperor may be reduced to just giving out elector titles to anyone who meets the requirements.

There's an alternative way to form Westphalia if you're not an elector, which is by leaving the HRE. That leaves you in a tricky position of being surrounded by HRE nations though so it's probably not the best idea.

Right after the religious war there was 3 catholic countries: the Emperor, 1 elector and me. And that piece of .... didn't grant me electorship. So it's quite random and only for small countries for sure.

There is one other way, I became an elector as Austria once this way...

Get a PU with an elector then integrate them.

It's happened to me twice. Second time I ended up as Bishop-elector of the order of st. john despite having something like 400 development down in italy.

I suspect you do still need to be allied with the Emperor. I know they want that imperial authority, but they aren't going to hand the power to choose the next emperor to a country which hates them and which they hate.

Forgot to mention. I had like +150-180 relationship with the Emperor. When Austria changed to Bohemia who converted I've made the same releations level with them. Still no luck.

XD

But yeah, if you want to become an elector yourself is getting a PU over another elector and integrating them or inheriting their throne, I once became elector as Poland because of a Bohemia PU. (If you play a HRE nation or even a non.HRE nation that is NOT elector, a marriage with Bohemia, getting your dynasty in their throne and then forcing the PU by war and integrating them later is usually your best bet to get elector. In this game as Theodoro I manage to flee to the HRE thanks to a kinky strategy in youtube, one of the electors got wipped out and for some reason Austria offered ME the elector status. Go figure.

HOW in 1470?! What strategy was it? 30 restart, three good campaigns and only once close to victory with Theodoro.
Or this is ally plc, make them love you and attack hre strategy?

Any new advice for me? Trying to do the same thing as Dithmarschen, aggressive expander thus far and starting to come into the Age of reformation.
