I just ruined an hours-long game by relocating my capital out of HRE via event
Played Poland, sold all my provinces to join HRE, later took event to move capital to warsaw. Noticed hours later that I am not in HRE anymore.

GJ me.

You don't need to be a member of the HRE to become emperor, you know? It's "just" a -50 modifier if you are not.

One hour? Barely a start man

HOURS. i said HOURS. as in MULTIPLE.

it is NOT just -50 but -100 because no big country in hre bonus either

Becoming Emperor is part of the goal, not the goal itself. So all of this extra effort including attacking HRE members ruins my plan indirectly unfortunately.

I've always found the most painfree way to become emperor when you are outside to begin with, is one of the following:

Option A. Wait until the reformation rolls around, become protestant. Curb stomp whoever the current emperor is, and make protestant the go to religion. Quickly declare war on whoever the emperor ends up being (so they can't make new electors), keep them in a war until you can make buddy buddy with whoever the (probably 2-3) electors are. This is how I became emperor as england.

Option B. Take 3(or 4) electors as vassals. Auto win the election, proceed to start consuming your vassals, replace with one province minors that you surround with your own territory.

Vassals imo is easiest. The reformation stuff requires me going protestant - not a friend of that. I restarted and am happily inside the HRE now. I noticed if i found the Commonwealth if apparently kicks me out of HRE, interesting.

If you are not an Elector you can not remain in the HRE as a Kingdom.

since you leave the HRE, make sure you're the Emperor before you form the Commonwealth so you can add allyour provinces again and get loads of IA. there's some long post by Ultrix Prime about this somewhere

You don't necessarily need to become protestant.
After the league start, but before the acutal war erupts, protestant electors are still forced to cast their votes for a catholic nation, and will avoid the current emperor due to him leading the catholic league.
As a catholic PLC you can easily draw the votes of all protestant electors (ally one or two and maintaining good relation with the others). A very good option is to ally and arrange marriage, and offer passage to the protestant leader, as once you're elected, they will not declare war due to the -3 stability hit from the marriage and good relations.
