Is there a way to selectively reduce the army maintenance?
In my current game for instance playing Castile I would like to reduce the maintenance for my main army in Europe but keep it up for my army in South America.

just look in the tab with the sliders >.> you can reduce almost every cost there down or even off for colonys or missionarys.

Ok. Too bad. Would make a lot of sense imho though.

Thanks a lot for your quick replies!

That's actually a very good idea. You should let Paradox know about it.

oh they sure know about it - it's not like Arumba doesn't mention it at least once each campaign, and I think it's also on his list of Adjustments...

this was asked on DDRJake's channel and he said that it was way too exploitable (or something like that). given he's at Paradox, this feature probably won't be created

that feature would only be used by the player(the AI totally being unable to decide which to mothball) thus giving the player a rather big advantage

the idea sounds nice but is in fact something that would mostly make the game all broken

I honestly don't see why they couldn't handle it almost exactly like mothballed ships. You have a unit "stand down" and whle they are in that state, their morale and manpower decline down to 25% of normal, just like ships.

The fort system absolutely works better in the hands of a player versus the AI, and nobody seriously calls having forts an exploit. But you sure can bait the AI and tie it into knots with forts. So saying the player could use the feature better seems pretty lame imo.

I think most of the exploits would not necessarily come from being able to use the feature better, but from making the AI react to mothballed armies.

If the AI takes it into account when evaluating player strength, it would be easy to stack all your troops in unreachable regions (3 or 4 forts can protect a nice area), mothball everything, and trick the AI into attacking you.
If the AI doesn't take it into account, you could go way above your forcelimit, mothball most of the troops and still have AI refuse to attack you, while enjoying lowered costs.

I think this is a feature that needs to be added as well. I will be trying to colonize places with native aggresion but my main army will be too expensive with the added cost of colonies. I could cut my army down in numbers but then would be at risk of being attacked. I cannot lower costs tho because then my soldiers protecting the colony get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ by natives. Leaves you with some tough decisions

Who cares about the AI? They are a bunch of cheaters anyways lol I will be at war with somebody and they will have never ending manpower and money. I destroy several of their stacks yet they are always able to build more. Sure they can take loans and hire mercenaries but are somehow able to recover from doing so while if I went bankrupt and had 0 manpower I would be attacked by all my enemies at once and itd be gg.

I might be a little late to ask this, but how do you do it for ships?

This should 100% be a feature. I have an army in the Americas I need active, while my armies in Spain are at peace. I should be able to selectively decide which armies need to be prepared for war with high morale and which armies can stand down and save money with.
