how smart do i have to be to play this game? HOI4 smart or civ smart or Total war smart?
lets be honest.. watching a 3 hr plus video for a tutorial is kind of a commitment..

would I be able to play this game relatively ok if I know civ and total war?

You don't need to be smart to play those games, only understand what you read. 6 to 10 years old smart. My 10 years old did some hard achievements without help, so it sets the required level of intelligence quite low overall.
It is not about smartasses, it is about patience. So, considering your words I say HoI4 style

Hell no, HOI4 is a bloated mess, EU4 is much more intuitive. Yes it´s a lot of numbers but mistakes like putting 10 divisions in a province and running out of supply don´t happen. Army management is way easier.

If you like chasing defeated armies around the map and have little use for actual military planning then stay here.

EU4 abstracts everything down to a basic level that you barely do or see anything.

If you are into diplomacy then definitely spend your time on this game. Everything else is meh.

I started III Becauss I wanted to be smart.

Suffice to say no 6 year old is going to ever figure out this game.

And 3 hours of commitment is nothing. You'll still be learning after thousands of hours.

Why watch videos at all? I can't think of anything more boring than observing someone else playing a game. Learn by doing. I did.

His words were HoI4, Civ or Total War. From those three HoI4 is the closer one, no doubt about it. Other natters are just that, other matters, I have my own opinion of HoI4, but this is not the place for it right now.

Don't watch a 3 hour plus video tutorial. Play the in-game tutorial- it doesn't do a good job of teaching you how to play, but it will show you the basics of where the buttons are- and then jump into a campaign as someone easy like the Ottomans. Accept that you'll make plenty of beginner mistakes, but you'll learn from each one and unlike with a video you'll actually be playing the game.

I jumped in from Civ 5 and Supremacy 1914. Made a lot of mistakes in my first few games but had a lot of fun and learned the game's systems well enough to discuss them.

It's really not a matter of being smart, it's just a matter of becoming familiar with everything. The average person can be good at the game, it just takes time and the interest to keep learning it no matter who you are.

I never watched any video and I'm doing great. Just learn as you play. If you don't know what something means you can just google it in 5 seconds.

You could basically say the same thing about any subject or discipline, but intelligence will almost always play some sort of factor.

There are limits.

Sure, but nothing about this game actually requires complex thought to play decently well, you don't have to take anything unpredictable or unstable into account, there's nothing hidden that you need to account for or people you need to compete or interact with(in sp of course); it's just a pile of simple systems stacked on top of each other with total information transparency that you can take as much time as you want to consider.

And one or two playthroughs are enough to achieve it, no need to spend hundreds or thousands of hours for that.

Once you learn the game you will have a god given right to tell others, on this forum, they are bad at playing and should quit.
I dont know if thats your thing, but seems to be how it pans out.
it's a easy game to pick up on and learn but if you want to add me or accepting my request, im more then happy to load up a game with you and help you out with anything your don't understand or find hard getting with the game.
