How does Treaty of Tordesillas work?
Hey guys.

I was just wondering whether there's any text or information in the game telling you about the Treaty of Tordesillas and how it works.

I've played Castille for several games and always forget about the Treaty until it's too late and by then I've incurred the penalty. Is there any pop up message or something, once the discovery of The New World, specifying as such? And what does it entitle? That we can't colonize a region already settled by another nation?

Thanks!

if a nation has a colonial nation (5 provinces) in a region, this region is claimed by them. you get a popup and every province in this region, which isnt colonized yet, get their flag on it and a comment.
you may settle there, but you get a -100 relation with the pope and that country (i think) and your settler increase is reduced by 25 (in this colony, not the whole world).
this only matters for catholic nations.
spain has a national idea, which gives them basically all of south america, if activated.

Great, thanks for the very thorough explanation.

But is there a way of knowing whether a region (say colonial Colombia) has already been settled by another nation or not?

I'm mostly asking this because I was just expecting the game to give us a heads up asking if we really wanted to colonize a region that has already been taken by another nation.

But, then again, I don't think EUIV is the kind of game to hold hands that much... Which is not a complaint at all.

You can see it once you click the province prior to sending the colonist. It kicks in for the first catholic country that will have an colony (so 5 provinces). Not sure of there is an message setting for it, but if it is you can make it pop up then. Search for pope or colonial region.

What it does is giving a settler bonus to the named country, and all other catholics will get a negative settler decrease. Also you get relation hits with either the pope and the country I think. But you can colonize anyway, and ofcourse other religions don't matter.

as i said... if you select a province to settle... there is the flag of that country (lets say spain) and it says "spain has a claim on this province" (or sth similar). (only if youre catholic)

Ok cool, thanks a lot for all the explanations!

I definitely know when a province becomes part of a country and all. Guess I wasn't paying attention much before sending my colonists :tcry:

There's a strange bug, where if your colony remains catholic but you convert to another religion, your you still have the treaty treaty active despite being protestant. However I think if your colony gains independence from you and colonizes the area you have a claim to, they aren't penalised by the treaty, the same with natives. (might be to do with whether it's 'overseas' or not. I might try a 'celtic shuffle' game again to find out :3)

Haha I see. Well, I guess with the humongous amount of options, countries, modifiers and what not things like those can slip by

I also think that the reason why I settled in another country's colony's province is because the flag, at least in the provinces' screen, is kinda small :steamsad:

you may suggest to paradox, that they increase the flagsize in their next patch or add an optional magnifier glass ;). they also may add an alarming trumpet blast and several windows asking: "are you sure, you want to settle here?" ;)

Haha I'm pretty sure people will bash me for such an idea, either telling me to get glasses or "politely" suggesting me to go play the CIV or Total War games :P

being polite is the nr. 1 trait of all ppl in all online forums... but yes.. you may want to consider playing some less demanding games http://kids.barbie.com/en-us/games :D
