What does the new mission/event joint engineering effort/Construction Commences do? It implies that it will build the Suez Canal but nothing has happened

The event gives Venice 2 provinces. I guess it is meant to be in preparation of the suez canal

I've never stayed Venice long enough to get this event. I always become Italy before it fires. Can you get it as Italy? I haven't checked.

You get this event by fulfilling a mission. Ally Mamluks and have 150 relations - if they accept you get 2 provinces from them in exchange for money.

You can get this right after gamestart if the mamluks dont hate you

"Into the Red Sea" - 25% trade power in Alexandria, ally Mamluks with 150+ opinion, have 2 years' income stored.

Fairly simple to get them onside if you slap the Ottomans around a bit as a mutual rival or somesuch within the first few years.

It only gives you the provinces but does not do anything for the canal then?

Gives you the provinces and then triggers the building 32 days later, according to the code. It'll still take many years before the canal itself is completed of course, and you'd better not lose the provinces in the meantime.

I deleted my old comment, because this is kinda weird

If i try this out with console to make it a bit faster, i get the option to cancel the canal and receive 20.000 ducats back (despite investing 0)

But i just tried this in my Venice run in 1500 on ironman and the canal didnt start to be built...?

We say yes, but it might be bugged so i asked for confirmation from someone

So again, it was bugged for that one game for me, no idea why - but here on a new game it worked:

I personally recommend cancelling it, getting 20.000 cash in 1468 is imo more important than having fleet access to india
